Reasons to Learn Spanish as a Family

Spain
Spain is arguably the country's favourite holiday destination as thousands flock to the beautifully-sunny country to get their fill of good weather. - Photo by Dan Gold on Unsplash

We all enjoy preparing for our next trip and going on family vacations to beautiful destinations, but a lot of us limit ourselves by choosing countries where they speak our language.

So why not make the preparation for your next holiday even more fun by starting to learn Spanish as a family?

There's no age limit on who can start speaking a new language at a conversational level, you don't have to be a college student taking a course abroad to learn Spanish. Adults and children of all ages can learn Spanish, so why not start with the basics today?

You will leave behind all the stress and anxiety related to not knowing how to get from one place to another and learn how to order food at a restaurant.

If you speak Spanish, you can interact with the local people of the place you are visiting, ask for directions without having to carry a dictionary with you, mingle and have fun at local beaches and theme parks… Plus, your trip can be the perfect way to get really immersed in the language and culture of the country!

Your whole family will make new friends and understand signposts, menus and audio descriptions without always having to wait for the English translation.

Learning Basic Spanish

It's a really good idea for both children and adults to learn basic Spanish because Spanish is spoken in so many countries worldwide in fact it is second only to English in the United States and Europe. Having a conversational level in Spanish is a basic proficiency level in the language. This means that a person has the ability to comfortably converse/communicate in the language.

There are many ways to go about learning Spanish, you could become a student of Spanish. Students typically want to become a teacher of Spanish and they will take a course over many years they will learn the history and the arts and all different areas of Spanish.

However, in this article we are going to focus on the basic level, we're going to focus on where you can find a lesson or tutor to teach you what you need to know for travel and holidays. Just enough that you won't get lost and you won't go hungry.

So, the two further headings we are going to explore in this article are firstly free online Spanish tuition for adults and children.

Second, paid private Spanish lessons or tutors.

So, let's get looking!

Free Online Spanish Tuition

There are so many ways that you can learn Spanish as a family for free online let's start with the obvious.

Everyone and I mean everyone has heard of Dora the Explorer. Parents might think that this is a great way for the kids to learn Spanish, but in truth, Dora is a Latino adventure who randomly throws in phrases here and there in her native tongue. However, if you're in a different country say Germany and you're watching Dora in German she actually throws in those phrases in English. I'm not saying don't encourage your children to watch the show, by all means, it's a good way to introduce our language to your child, I'm just saying if you specifically want them to learn Spanish there are better ways.

One great example is Rock'n'Learn on YouTube, this channel has several different languages and it covers everything from basic words and phrases to colours and numbers. Do you not just useful for children, adults will also find it useful but their videos are colourful and engaging.

For Adults, a YouTube channel which I have used and found very handy is called Language of Earth, they have a Playlist called Spanish Lessons for Beginners which consists of 16 videos. The playlist teaches you everything in the Spanish language from how to count to how to hold a conversation in different situations.

Another way you can learn Spanish online for free is by downloading Free Language Apps. For me, Duolingo was the app that worked best. Duolingo works by teaching lessons that are fun and split into bite-sized skills that feel like games. As mentioned this app is available to use for free, with ads and limitations however there is a plus version that comes at a price.

Paid Private Spanish Lessons or Tutors.

For many students, the most challenging aspect of taking online Spanish courses is the inability to focus on a screen for extended periods. This causes some students to get easily distracted by social media or other websites... This is one of the main reasons having a tutor on the other side of that screen might be super beneficial to you!

Your Spanish tutor not only needs to have a clear strategy for you to reach your language learning goals but will be there to support you every step of the way, most of the tutors at Superprof offer you the option to take in-home or online lessons. This means you can learn whichever way is more comfortable for you, in your own space, at your own pace and at whatever time suits you.

I haven't even mentioned the best part yet, most of our tutors even provide the first lesson for free, yep that's right so all you have to do is go to the homepage type in the lesson you are looking for select a location and then all of the tutors will pop up most of him provide the first lesson for free and the prices for every other lesson will be available beside their name.

Of course, there are other options for studying the language of Spanish, people do you prefer to take actual courses. But that would involve joining the school and it's less likely that both adults and children could study together, which would make it less likely that your family could study as a unit.

With all that being said, if your family want to learn Spanish together, my advice would be to find a private tutor or study online together and learn some basic Spanish before your next holiday.
