Technical Photography:  Some Tips on the Art of the Portrait.

Many photographers will agree that the portrait is best suited to bring out the essence of a person, but it is also one of the most difficult!

Find out which are the best photography courses near me.

quality-portrait
Your interactions and directing with the model will ensure a quality portrait!

The relationship between the model and the photographer is one of complete trust! It is essential that the model feel comfortable and at ease during the session, regardless of the pose or premise-  this will ensure an artistically rich shoot.

In regards to framing the rules are simple:

  • A tight frame, a close up shot, will ensure that the models features and emotions come out.
  • A wider angle, you got it, a wider frame, will involve more of the environment surrounding the model and will thus employ the setting to give meaning and shape to your composition.

The amateur photographer can absolutely decide to highlight a specific point of the model's face by focusing on a detail; most of the time, the focus is at the eye level, although your artistic style may differ, but Art is in the choice after all!  Remember: Art photography demands practice!

Remember that reducing the depth of field will create more of a contrast between the model and the background!

Natural is best, which is to say: Don't force it! Let the model choose the clothing for the shoot and even the poses, this will make them feel more comfortable and will result in the subjects personality coming out in your photos!

Technical Photography: Landscape Photos

Do I Shoot in a manual or automatic setting? Iso? Digital Camera or Film Camera? What lense? What Stop? No matter your style of working or choice of equipment, Landscape photography is a right of passage for any photographer bent on excelling!

If you want to take breathtaking Landscape photos Wide Angle lenses are a must! No wonder they are called Wide-Angle Landscape Photography Lenses! With good photo equipment (diaphragm, autofocus, focal ...), it will be much easier to immortalize a natural landscape with a DSLR camera. (A digital single-lens reflex camera is a digital camera that combines the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film.)

Here are some tips on how to capture stunning Landscape photos:

  • Capture natural movements
  • Take into account any people that might be in frame
  • Use the rule of three
  • Don't be shy with your filters! They can work wonders on accentuating the sky or the ground!
  • Create depth of Field
  • Use water as a mirror to highlight the sky or close by landmarks
  • Remember that Sunrise and Sunset are the Photographers greatest allies! (If you use them wisely!)

Finally the Golden Rule of Landscape photography : don't always look for symmetry in your frame!

Generally speaking, an overcast sky, dull colors, low light : They can actually bring life to a usually cliché Landscape photograph. Keep in mind that Photographs can be edited and so modified in post-processing, with a polarizing filter for example,  or an editing software, although this process is sometimes debated by the aficionados of "real" photography.

Finally, the most important thing in a landscape photograph is to convey a certain message, whether it is an emotion or an important message, such as the conservation of nature for example, or to showcase the frailty and abuse of a certain area.  The Amateur photographer or the Professional photographer must let the landscape speak for itself while retaining its natural appearance.

So take out your tri-pod, your telephoto or wide lenses, and take a picture at night or during the day and immortalise that landscape or even that urban setting you-ve always wanted to capture!

Photo techniques and tricks for Wildlife Photography

How many of you have or have seen dozens upon dozens, if not hundreds of photos of pets? But do they capture the spirit of the animal? The personality? If not, this is not photography.

Check for online photography courses here.

baby-elephant
Wild animals for example are the most difficult to photograph, but once you see the result you will understand that the reward far exceeds the labor.

Photographing Animal subjects and Human subjects is a very different task. A human will usually follow your directions, suggest new ideas or poses, and generally be co-operative, when photographing an animal however, the job gets a bit trickier!

Here are some guidelines on how to manage a photoshoot with a pet, or even a wild animal:

  • Always be level with the animal
  • Make sure to focus on framing the eyes as a way to get the maximum expression
  • Never use a Flash as it will most likely scare it off or worst!
  • Increase your shutter speed as to allow more light and thus "freeze motion"
  • Make sure to use a telephoto lense for Wild animals
  • Adjust your setting to as to have a RAW file
  • Absolutely use the area around the animal to get a better sense of it's  environment, thus creating a more intresting photo

Wildlife photography is a great way to discover the art of macro photography. By regularly photographing small animals, you will learn to master your zoom and your focus techniques, while immortalizing moments impossible to see with the naked eye. Feel free to check the photo blogs for inspiration.

To improve your Wildlife Photography, students can register for a photo course in the countryside: there, you can practice your work with  hyperfocal (The hyperfocal distance is the closest distance at which a lens can be focused while keeping objects at infinity acceptably sharp) and your Canon EOS Camera, for example, with a professional photographer with a lot of experience in Wildlife photography!
