• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  I developed an interest in healthcare when I was young. I knew I needed to care for individuals suffering and going through challenges. My father suffered a serious health problem when I was 10 years old. I learned as much as I could from a young age to safeguard him whenever necessary.
  
  I realized as a nursing student that a good nurse was also a good teacher. You have to know it to teach it! Patient education is a vital part of what we do. I learned complex topics and how to break them down on an understandable level for patients. I developed a passion for teaching and in the latter part of my career realized it was time to give back and educate future nurses. 🩺

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I love to teach advanced medical-surgical nursing, pharmacology, pathophysiology, test-taking strategies, and NCLEX board exam preparation. Critical thinking and clinical judgement are essential is developing strong nurses who will become lifelong learners. Ensuring nurses know the "why" is imperative to always implementing the "what". I enjoy discussing intricate case studies and real-world applications with my students. While medical terminology can be a bit dry, I strive to make it as engaging as possible as it is fundamental in using test taking strategies when you aren't sure about the answer. 🩺

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  There are many individuals throughout my life that impacted me. The one individual who made a lasting impression was my high school band director, Robert Hindsley. I went through family issues during that time; he never gave up on me. He was hard on me and didn't let me quit, despite my wishes. He showed me that being a living example, being available, without judgement, and a good listener were hallmarks of a mentor. There isn't a week that goes by that I don't reflect on one of his lessons and that is what I strive to be as a tutor and mentor. 🩺

• What qualities do you think are required to be a good tutor?

  A good tutor embodies the qualities I mentioned in question #3, in addition to patience, empathy, and strong communication skills, it is crucial to simplify complex concepts and make them understandable. Offering encouragement and support is key to boosting students' confidence. Being adaptable and having a deep grasp of the subject are critical attributes. 🩺

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  One memorable moment was when I helped a young lady struggling with pharmacology following the first exam. She was exceedingly defeated and ready to give up on nursing school. We worked together to come up with a plan, we spent hours reviewing and practicing, and I met with her on regular intervals. She took the initiative and had the drive to study more than she had in previous courses. Her improvement and eventual success in the course were incredibly rewarding. She also realized that it took HARD work and perseverance to achieve her goals. She is a successful RN today!
  
  This experience solidified my passion for tutoring and helping others achieve their goals which ultimately were life changing. 🩺

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  Having dedicated over three decades to nursing, I've witnessed the continuous evolution of the field and the necessity of staying up to date with evidence-based guidelines. At times, I find it challenging to identify why students struggle to grasp certain concepts. Through this experience, I've cultivated patience and refined my listening skills, which are crucial in addressing and bridging these gaps. I've learned the importance of meeting students where they are and avoiding assumptions. 🩺

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  My passion lies in teaching and making complex nursing subjects ble to all students. I find great satisfaction in helping students understand and succeed in challenging topics. Additionally, I am passionate about continuous learning and staying updated with the latest advancements in nursing. 🩺

  What makes me a SuperProf is my commitment to students' success and my ability to adapt my teaching methods to meet individual needs. I am dedicated to staying current with the latest nursing practices and educational techniques to provide the best learning experience for my students.
