  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am lucky enough to have been born English, so I speak fluent English for this reason. However, I loved English lessons from the start, because I have always been an absolute bookworm. I read so often as a child, that I excelled at English, and was always top of my class for it.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

The first person that springs to my mind is Shakespeare. Not just because we studied his plays so much at school, but also because he is the person who has added more words to the English language than anyone else. What's amazing about this though, is that the words he added to the English language were used for the first time in his plays. Therefore, the audience had never heard these words before, yet they figured them out from the context (what was happening, and the other words that they know). This for me is what's so beautiful about language; that everyone can learn new words from context, just as we do when we are babies learning our own language.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I love English idioms, especially 'It's raining Cats and Dogs!', because it's such a funny phrase. I find it impossible not to picture cats and dogs falling out of the sky! It's a fun one to teach too, and students can usually figure out what it means after I give them some clues.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

English is the lingua-franca (common language) of the world. If a person can speak English, they can travel almost anywhere and be able to communicate with locals. Speaking English opens up so many doors in terms of jobs, access to University courses in English-speaking countries, and even visas to English-speaking countries. I love to help my students have the opportunity to broaden their horizons by speaking English.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Nearly all of the students I have taught during my 15 years experience have the most issues with English pronunciation. It's not hard to understand why! The English language is actually a mixture of words from different regions and countries, because the English 'borrowed' these words when they colonized other countries.

What can massively help overcome pronunciation issues in English is a combination of two things:
    1) Having a teacher who uses targeted pronunciation exercises, to help students improve.
    2) Practicing pronunciation daily, preferably with a native English speaker.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I was painfully shy from around age 5 to 17, but if one of my teachers got me talking about something I was passionate about, I would happily talk at length about it. This is the key to getting any student to talk, you must find out what they're passionate about, and get them talking about it. This is something I apply to every one of my students.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

For many years now, I have been living and teaching in different countries around the world, from Europe to Asia. The most important lesson I've learnt is that students from different countries and cultures need different teaching approaches, and face different learning issues. For example, a student from China or South Korea will not only find certain words much harder to pronounce than a student from Europe, and be used to totally different grammar structures. But also, they come from a very different culture and often need a different teaching method.

There isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' teaching method, so I always adapt my lessons to teach exactly what my student(s) need, not only in terms of content but also style.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I believe I'm a Superprof in teaching the English language because I'm not only very knowledgeable about my subject, but I am also passionate about it. I want to give everyone the gift of communication in English, as I know how important it is for creating opportunities. I work hard to teach exactly what each student needs to improve, rather than a one-size-fits-all teaching approach. I also do my best to make my lessons interesting and to boost the confidence of my students.
