About Chantelle

I hold a bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry (first class), followed by a Master's degree at Imperial College London (distinction) and a PhD in Biomedical Science from King's College London. Over the past five years, I have had the privilege of tutoring more than 100 students from diverse backgrounds and various parts of the world. My experience spans working with students who have gone on to attend some of the most prestigious schools in the UK, including Westminster and St Paul's Boys' School. This extensive tutoring journey has allowed me to develop a deep understanding of different educational systems and requirements while also building a comprehensive database of exam questions. My dedication to education and proven track record in helping students achieve their academic goals have made me a sought-after tutor for those aiming for top-tier institutions. I prepared students following AQA, CIE, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas. I've also tutored classes of 30+ undergraduate biology students at King's College London.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My educational background is mainly biology and chemistry so I took on the role of a lab demonstrator and tutor for undergraduate students at King's College London. I started receiving positive feedback from the students about my ability to explain intricate concepts in a relatable manner which was helping my students to understand and remember the concepts. I obviously found this immensely rewarding and decided to take more of an active role in tutoring these subjects.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I have had the opportunity to teach biology and chemistry at various levels, including GCSE, A-level, and even some undergraduate courses. Two of the most captivating topics to explore with the students are photosynthesis and respiration. These pathways collectively demonstrate how the key processes in photosynthesis produce food, which is then utilized in respiration to convert that food into energy. Going into great detail, I am able to illustrate the intricate connections between these processes and captivate my students with some of the most amazing biochemical mechanisms known to science!

When it comes to chemistry, one of my personal favourite subjects to discuss with students is NMR. NMR involves gathering all the available information and using it to construct a coherent structure for a compound. It's like solving a puzzle, where different data points are pieced together to reach a logical conclusion. I find this process of utilizing various pieces of data to arrive at a meaningful result truly engaging.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My passion for both chemistry and biology can be attributed to the collective influence of the teachers I encountered during my academic journey. From secondary school (Year 9-11) to sixth form (Year 12-13), I was fortunate enough to have teachers who displayed genuine interest in the progress of their students. Their unwavering dedication nurtured a profound appreciation for these subjects, ultimately leading me to choose an undergraduate course that focuses on biology and chemistry.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A valuable tutor possesses not only a solid grasp of the subject matter but also the ability to communicate complex concepts with clarity and brevity. Equally significant is the attribute of patience, along with a genuine understanding of the challenges students encounter. To ensure my effectiveness as a tutor, I adapt my teaching style according to the individual student's requirements, considering their distinct learning preferences.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I had the privilege of assisting a student who had a strong desire to pursue a career in medicine, despite facing difficulties with her grades. She had made several attempts at the exams but decided to give it one final try, and that's when she approached me. Four months before the crucial exam, I took her under my wing and developed a comprehensive plan to guide her through her studies. During our sessions, she would share her understanding of the topics, and I would address any areas of confusion and provide additional explanations. We also worked together on practice questions related to the subject matter. When she shared her exam results, I was filled with joy to discover that she not only achieved the desired grade but also secured admission to her first-choice university for the medical course. Needless to say, it was a moment of immense satisfaction for both of us!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

As a tutor, one challenge I often face is when a student persistently struggles to grasp the core of a concept, despite multiple lessons. To address this, I utilize a range of strategies to assist their comprehension. Firstly, I prioritize providing a comprehensive explanation of the topic at hand. Next, I incorporate practical exercises that enable the student to apply the concept actively. Additionally, I encourage the student to explain the topic to me, which grants me valuable insights into their thinking process and facilitates the identification of specific areas of confusion or gaps in knowledge. By implementing these techniques, we can effectively pinpoint the exact areas that demand additional focus and attention.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

In my capacity as a researcher, I constantly get the chance to utilize my expertise and abilities in biology, chemistry and beyond! Nevertheless, my passions go beyond the confines of the laboratory. I have a deep affection for the outdoors and eagerly embrace every opportunity to embark on long hikes.(Although the unpredictable weather in London doesn't always cooperate).
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I truly value the success and well-being of my students and I demonstrate this through my personalized approach to their learning. Outside of our lesson time, I create customized notes, design relevant worksheets, and offer the necessary resources to support their educational journey and help them reach their personal goals. Additionally, I prioritize accessibility, making myself readily available to address any questions or concerns that may come up. As a young scientist myself, I know how daunting biology and chemistry can be, and I hope my work as a tutor can make both subjects a bit less challenging for my talented students! :)
