  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was a child. As I was growing up, I developed several talents and other interests that could decide what I want to do. One of them is helping my friends and neighbors with their homework and school project. It was in the year 1985, when I turned 20 years old that I realized I want to be a professional teacher. I graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Psychology and became a preschool teacher the following year.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach academic English where I thoroughly explain the lesson, give more practical examples and test my student`s comprehension through oral and written exercises. I also teach English as a Second Language where I discuss the different parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, give drills in pronunciation and vocabulary enrichment. I use true-to-life situations as topics of lessons so the student can relate to and understand the lesson better. When I teach Tagalog as a Second Language, I always take into consideration the main purpose of my student in learning the language so I can customize the lesson according to his learning need. Since I am exposed to both Filipino and North American cultures, I am able to use my life experiences as basis of topics for discussion, and ice breaker for conversation. I like to discuss topics relevant to my student like his interests, current events, but I tend to talk less about personal matters so we set some boundary.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have several teachers I look up to, mostly those who taught English and Filipino. I remember their teaching strategies which paved the way for me to develop my own methodology.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor, apart from the ability to teach, one must have the desire to make a positive difference in the learning experience of the students.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

It was the year 2002, I was teaching the multiplication table to three Korean sisters who had a three-year-old brother. I thought it would be fun to use familiar tunes of nursery songs and rhymes to learn multiplication, so we sang tables 1 to 10 using different tunes. When the three girls started singing the table of 3 to the tune of `Twinkle Twinkle Little Star``, their 3-year-old-brother suddenly butted in and answered ``24`` when we were singing < 3 x 8 = ... > We all looked at him in surprise and he was smiling at us. We clapped our hands for him. We knew that he learned the answer because he repeatedly heard us singing the multiplication tables on a daily basis for several weeks. It was LEARNING BY REPETITION.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Some students have pre-conceived biases about the subject, if not about themselves. For instance, proper pronunciation can be such a challenge to some. It could be because where they come from, such is the way everybody else MISpronounces the word, it could also be regional defect, or one's low self-esteem. It could be challenging to unlearn such old habits, but patience is a virtue.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Like I mentioned earlier, teaching was my childhood dream. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I also like singing so I use singing in teaching. I compose songs and carry out tunes that help me teach the concepts to my students. My other passion is cooking, so I use my specialty dishes as rewards to students who do a good job. They like the food I cook or bake!
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof ?

What makes me a SuperProf is my ability to see through the student's ability, his attitude and behaviour and how I can help to achieve the learning goal.
  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak both English and Tagalog fluently because of my origins, life experiences and some previous school teachers inspired me to learn.
  • What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

I realize that as time goes by, students from all walks of life has varying learning needs, and I aim to serve them and learn with them.
