About Sophia
I am a student who has just finished year 13, studying French, Psychology and English Literature A levels, and German AS. I achieved A*A*A overall, including an A* in French (with full marks in the speaking component of the exam). I got 10 Grade 9s in my GCSEs (including in German and French), and 1 Grade 8. I also have a DELF B2 certificate in French, and a Goethe B1 certificate in German. As you would expect, I am a passionate linguist, and have a place at Oxford University to study French and German deferred for 2025. During my gap year, I would love to develop my teaching skills through private tutoring, something I have already had considerable experience in through my 2 years of volunteering in various primary schools in Cambridge, teaching both French and English. I get great satisfaction in knowing I've helped someone experience and master the love of foreign languages, and ensure that I get to know the student really well in my lessons, as I've noticed that they are much more willing to work when they get on well with a teacher! In my free time, I am an avid baker with my own small business, dance regularly, and love music (especially my flute!).

As a tutor, I believe in tailoring my lessons to a student's needs, therefore my lessons will vary significantly depending on what the student is struggling with. I will do an introductory lesson, where I get to know the student, their strengths and their weaknesses, and ensure that I am continually ensuring that I am targeting their weak areas, to ensure that they are benefiting as much as possible from the lessons. A typical lesson (although this would certainly change depending on the student) would last around 1 hour, would begin with a warm-up game (e.g. a vocabulary game), and then move on to teaching a skill. We may tackle a new grammar point, and then spend the rest of the lesson practising it and putting it into practice. For example, I may ask the student to come up with their own examples of sentences using the grammar point. Alternatively, we may focus on a skill, for example listening or reading, vital skills for the GCSE examinations. Where I feel it would be useful, I will also set weekly homework for the student to reinforce the skills we go over in the lessons. Having only just finished my A levels, I feel I am in a better place than most to teach, as I have recently been through the education system and am very aware of the most effective teaching strategies, and the ways in which learning French can be made more enjoyable. I am willing to teach any age of students, and up to GCSE level qualifications.
