About Pauline

I have lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, London, Paris, Bologna, Rome and now Los Angeles and have been bilingual (French-English) my whole life, going to international schools, completing my undergraduate degree in London then my masters in Paris, learning to speak Italian and Mandarin along the way! I come from a French-American family and am the embodiment of a transcultural teacher: I have been through both the French and Anglo-Saxon educational systems and have taken the best from each and left the rest behind! (Ie. I will always be honest about a student’s level or improvement but in an encouraging and uplifting manner!) I taught Philosophy and French Literature classes (two compulsory subject matters in France) to high-school students in private ‘Lycées’ for about 3 years, throughout the school year but also pre-exam periods, with accelerated intensive courses, and pride myself in my students’ extremely positive feedback (and good exam scores of course!). I am a young, dynamic and passionate teacher and will transmit my love of language and learning to anyone who is struggling or bored with traditional methods of teaching!

My teaching method and techniques:
Although I can easily adapt to your specific requirements and work around your goals and needs, my method relies in part on real-life colloquial communication and practical situations you might encounter everyday. Because of my background and career paths in philosophy, social studies, history of art and film, I am also fond of theme-based discussions and learning through literature, news and movies. Keeping my student engaged and involved is my priority because I believe in learning through enjoyment. I believe in collaboration and less top-down approach to learning and I pride myself in being attentive to each student’s particularities and needs, and will always be open to suggestions or criticism!

A typical lesson plan:
This of course would depend on the student’s age, level, expectations, goals and the frequency of our lessons. I typically like to start the lessons with 5-10min conversation using as impetus a movie scene, an article, a video, a chapter from a book, a podcast which we will have agreed upon before the lesson. Then, building from this discussion, we might add new words, expressions and idioms to the student’s record of acquired vocabulary, and practice with this ever-expanding list frequently. Then, depending on the goals determined by the student, we might go over some grammar or comprehension exercises (or home/coursework) or work on pronunciation and improving your speaking skills.

What sets me apart:
My very international background, various tutoring experiences across the world and personal knowledge of language learning and test-taking. I think it is safe to say my lessons, while principally revolving around language, will engage and enrich the student in many different ways by broaching on various other subjects (Philosophy, Social Sciences, Politics, World History, Italian, Film History, Art History…) that they may be interested in. I can also help them navigate university applications for the UK, having successfully integrated and graduated from one of the Top 10 Universities in the world - UCL (University College London) as well as the Sorbonne for my masters. My classes will not only improve any student’s language skills and ability to understand, express and communicate efficiently in French but also bring a deeper understanding of French culture and transcultural (and translingual) differences!

Who the lessons are for:
I am open to any kind of student and level, having said this I have more experience working with high-school and middle school students as well as people who are applying to college (whether at the undergraduate or graduate level). I can also give one-on-one lessons to adults who wish to practice their French, consolidate their understanding of this beautiful and complex language in a practical and useful way. I am open to teaching to younger students, I am in fact in the process of teaching my 8 and 10 year old nieces, who live in France, to speak English!
