Boxing is one of those skills that has benefits no matter which way you cut it. Not to mention if you ever need to use it, then it means you need to use it. Boxing is worth it simply for the fact that it is not a high-cost sport and has many fitness benefits. It involves strength training, and all sorts of cardio and in general is a great way to push your body to its physical limits while enjoying yourself potentially. It is a full-body workout every time you commit yourself to boxing. So, if you’re interested in self-defence, elevating your workout level or simply losing weight, boxing is an excellent choice.
Boxing is the perfection of several key concepts, it’s not too difficult to learn boxing but it is very difficult to perfect it. Stance and manoeuvring are very important in boxing, the way you simply hold yourself, and the placement of your hands and head are all very important in boxing and getting information from the way your opponent holds themself is very important. Some basic skills for all boxing beginners are jabs, crosses, hooks and even uppercuts. Beginners will also have to work on their speed, their coordination and especially their footwork, there is no use in being a master with your hands if you’re just going to end up tripping over your own feet!
One of the benefits of boxing is that it is a low-cost sport that can be performed anywhere, as a result, beginners can self-teach. However, self-teaching can only get beginners so far, it will allow them to know the stances, the skills and so forth theoretically but if you’re by yourself, learning the skills may come slowly and you may find physically you are not progressing as quickly as you hoped. Coaches are the perfect solution to these problems but they also have other benefits. Arguably the main benefit is that coaches will be able to provide constructive criticism on your practice. It takes an experienced boxer to see where learning is going wrong. However, it’s not just criticism, it can be a motivational boost, commenting on your progress, studies and experts always say that when we exercise with someone else it keeps us accountable and increases our productivity and morale. Energy, drive and perseverance are all useful in boxing and an instructor can only help with them. Coaches will also help you keep to a schedule, it can be difficult to ensure that you box weekly if you’re the only person keeping yourself accountable but when you have a regularly scheduled meeting/class with a coach, you can be sure that you’re working regularly on boxing!
Coaches can help all students in a more general sense too, no matter what subject you’re studying they can provide a comfortable environment that allows you room to grow. Questions can be asked and your self-esteem can improve greatly under a supportive instructor. Not only will you become a great boxer under the training of a coach, but you may also discover that coaching is your preferred method of learning! The privacy, and flexibility offered by a coach are also un-rivalled. Clubs are only open at certain times and you can’t force a coach there to teach you whenever you want, and if you’re self-learning well then you simply have no mentor to count on. However, don’t be thinking that a coach will do all the work for you, a coach is primarily there to motivate and guide your own work. To make sure that you’re doing things correctly and nudging you in the correct directions but they are hands-off enough to make sure that you’re the person doing your own work and figuring out problems and routines yourself. In short, by getting a coach, you are becoming an independent learner.
