About Max

I grew up in Brussels, Belgium, studied in the Netherlands, and spent five exciting years working in London’s tech industry. Along the way, I fell in love with languages and meeting people from different cultures. Teaching French became a natural extension of this passion, and I’ve been doing it for years—starting with online exchanges and growing through word of mouth. I love creating a warm, supportive space where students feel comfortable and excited to practice their French.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I'm a native French speaker, not just because I grew up in Brussels, but also because half of my family is from France-my mom is French. So I grew up surrounded by both Belgian and French culture, which gave me a broad perspective on how French is spoken in different places.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For me, Astérix is a great emblem of French culture. He's clever, independent, and always ready to stand up to challenges-plus, the humor in the comics is very French. It's full of wordplay, cultural references, and that little touch of irony that's so typical in everyday conversations.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

French culture is often associated with class, elegance, and gastronomy-and for good reason. The way people take their time to enjoy food, the importance of good conversation over a meal, and even small things like greeting with a kiss on the cheek, all reflect a distinct way of life.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

French used to be the most spoken language in the world, and its cultural and historical influence is still huge. It's a rich, complex language that's shaped philosophy, literature, cinema, and diplomacy. Learning French isn't just about speaking a new language-it's about accessing a deep cultural heritage.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The hardest part is probably pronunciation and all the little exceptions in grammar (because, let's be honest, French loves exceptions!). But the key is practice-listening to real conversations, speaking as much as possible, and not being afraid of making mistakes.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I used to read a lot of manga and comics, but I don't read much in French anymore. It's funny because even though I teach French, I was never someone who read classic books for fun. I think that's why I encourage my students to find what works for them-learning a language isn't about forcing yourself to do what feels boring. If comics, movies, or even video games help, then that's a great way to improve!
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Traveling around Europe, especially going back and forth between Belgium and France, has given me a deep appreciation of how French is spoken differently depending on the region. I even spent six months in Montreal, where the French is really different! That was an eye-opening experience-same language, but the expressions, pronunciation, and even the rhythm of speech were completely unique.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I focus on making French practical and approachable. I don't just teach textbook grammar-I help students feel confident using the language in real conversations. Whether it's pronunciation, casual expressions, or getting past the fear of speaking, I adapt my lessons to what my students actually need. And most importantly, I make sure they enjoy the process!
