About Maria
I'm a Colombian native and linguaphile living in Washington, DC. I learned English when my family moved to the US, and have since picked up Italian and, most recently, German as an adult. While taking French in a traditional college class, I realized that the methods used felt more like a math, or "language engineering" class, and didn't resemble how I had acquired English at all. This realization led me to dive deep into the world of language learning, where I began applying the methods of comprehensible input and language acquisition to both my Spanish students and my own language studies. The difference between my French (traditional) and my Italian and German (intuitive acquisition) was night and day. I gained a profound appreciation for what our brains are naturally capable of when we work with them, not against them! I learned that "kids pick up languages easier than adults" has a lot less to do with them being kids and a lot more to do with the different approaches used between the two. I've loved applying these methods myself and teaching students over the years, watching them progress to fluency with an ease they didn't imagine possible. I'm also a complete language nerd and love to geek out on linguistics, grammar, and syntax. Ultimately, language is a fascinating system humans use to convey meaning, and learning a new language gives us new ways to do it!

Did you know our brains are naturally wired to learn languages without the struggle and monotony of traditional classes? Think about how you learned your first language—you didn't do grammar drills or memorize endless flashcards. You learned by listening, speaking, and connecting patterns of sounds to meaning. That's how I learned English when my family moved from Colombia, how I picked up Italian as an adult, and how I'm currently learning German. I discovered my love for teaching Spanish over 8 years ago as a college student. My teaching style blends my own language learning experiences with methods that I've found work best for each student. Our lessons will be tailored to your level, primarily using comprehensible input and language acquisition methods, supplemented by traditional techniques like vocabulary and grammar when appropriate. Even if you've never spoken or heard Spanish before, you'll walk away from our first lesson amazed at how much you've understood and internalized. Depending on your level, we'll focus on communication—comprehension, speaking, and listening. As you progress, we'll delve into the mechanics of what you've learned (aka the grammar). I'll also share the theories and neuroscience behind language learning as we go. We'll work with the natural, incredible processes our brains use to acquire language. You'll be challenged but not overwhelmed, and you'll see progress with every lesson. We'll also address any gaps in your foundational knowledge. I provide supplemental materials and guidance for practice outside our lessons, using the same methods and techniques that have helped me in my own language learning journey.
