About Ian
I am TFL certified and have a Masters in Education policy from the U of A. I believe that anyone can learn, and that students learn best when they are both challenged and supported. Making mistakes is an important part of the learning process, and a willingness to make mistakes is a key predictor of success. However, this process is often difficult for students, and a good teacher should support them in this process.
In my free time, I run a reading and study group, which teaches people how to read political philosophy and encourages them to develop their own political thinking. As part of that work, I taught a seminar on argumentative writing, and I am currently developing a talk on reading and study skills.

I see the teaching process as collaborative, meaning that students will have input on their learning. I excel at giving feedback, and I expect students to challenge themselves. Making mistakes is the most important part of the learning process, and I offer a supportive environment that encourages student excellence.
A typical conversation lesson might involve a discussion about friendship or technology. During the discussion, I will ask questions, take notes, and give make corrections. At more advanced levels, I encourage students to take on a project that will challenge them.
However, more important than the lessons are the study plans. Learning a language is difficult, and most of the work happens outside of the classroom. Therefore, I will work with students to develop a study plan.

I am pleased to write this recommendation for Ian, who has been an outstanding instructor in my English speaking learning process. Throughout the lessons, Ian demonstrated exceptional skills in identifying my strengths and areas for improvement. His attention to detail and commitment to my progress made a significant difference in my language learning journey.
One of the most notable aspects of his teaching was his ability to accurately assess my English proficiency level from the first class. He quickly recognized that I was struggling with past tense usage, an issue that I hadn't noticed myself. Instead of just pointing it out, he explained it in a way that was both clear and encouraging. He took extra time after class to write detailed notes, explaining the mistake and offering practical resources to help me improve.
Furthermore, Ian recommended a selection of resources that were perfectly suited to my level. His personalized approach to teaching, based on my specific needs, helped me make noticeable progress in a short amount of time.
I highly recommend Ian to anyone seeking to improve their English.Over a year ago, I was in China, excited to start my student life in the USA. While packing, I decided to find a language and culture exchange partner online. That’s how I met Lan. After arriving in the US, we started having weekly video chats.
It was my first time studying abroad, while I was excited, adapting to a new culture was harder than I expected. While I had a good grasp of English grammar and vocabulary from my studies in China, casual conversations with native speakers were daunting. Small talk, which seemed effortless to those around me, set an additional obstacle to my social life, beyond English itself. I struggled to keep up, which affected my confidence and social interactions.
During our weekly conversations, I talked a lot about my struggles living in a foreign country. Lan was always a sturdy mentor—compassionate, optimistic, and empowering. He provided me with a safe space to speak with a native English speaker. To my surprise, my English fluency improved significantly, as well as my confidence. Practice does make progress!
I highly recommend Lan as an English tutor. He’s the best teacher I’ve ever had. Lan is extremely good at explaining things in simple and concise words. You probably have experienced a lot feeling lost listening to a native speaker, but you’ll never experience this with Lan. He knows how to make you feel safe and comfortable speaking English. Plus, he’s great at keeping conversations fun and engaging—our chats often lasted 2–3 hours!
If you're seeking an effective and supportive English tutor, Lan is undoubtedly the person to go to. His ability to foster a friendly and enriching learning environment makes him an invaluable guide in your language journey.Ian has a remarkable ability to explain concepts clearly. His dedication is evident in how organized and well-prepared he always is. Ian creates a comfortable learning environment where everyone feels at ease to ask questions and participate. He is incredibly flexible and quite knowledgeable about different learning styles, making the experience personalized and effective. I highly recommend Ian to anyone looking for an intelligent and supportive tutor!
Ian is someone you can wholeheartedly trust and would be an amazing English teacher. In all our interactions, be it casual chats or important discussions, he's always been completely honest. What's more, he's highly focused on his students. He takes the time to understand each one's strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles, and then customizes his teaching. All these qualities combined make Ian both trustworthy and a great teacher.
Ian is a great communicator and will work with your learning goals and your schedule. He really cares about helping his students do their best!
