About Namita

Hi, I am excited to introduce myself as a highly motivated and accomplished Assistant Professor of Economics with a passion for teaching, research, and service. After completing my Master's and M.Phil degree in Economics from JNU, New Delhi, I worked as an Economist to POSRI, a Banker for almost a decade and Research Consultant for IIM-Lucknow. Currently serving as Assistant Professor of Economics, under Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. In 2020, I left my banking job to focus on helping students with a lack of mathematics and/or economics background who were struggling to excel in Economics courses, like I once did. I understand the difficulties they face, as I too was once scared of Econometrics, to the point where I dropped out of my Ph.D program. But today, I am proud to teach Econometrics to students from all over the world. My teaching skills have been recognized by positive evaluations from students and with the award of NET-JRF in Economics. Additionally, I serve as a reviewer for professional organizations and am dedicated to promote the field of economics to underrepresented groups. I also volunteer as an online math tutor for e-Vidyaloka, a non-profit organization working to improve the education system in rural India and also volunteer for Isha Inner Engineering, offline programs held locally. I offer you my knowledge, skills, and experience for your growth and success. Namaskaram!

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

Economics is indeed a fascinating field that offers a wide range of subjects to study. As an economics student, you will learn about microeconomics, which deals with the behavior of individuals and firms in markets, and macroeconomics, which deals with the performance, structure, and behavior of entire economies. You will also learn about economic history and the different economic systems that have been used throughout history, such as capitalism, socialism, and communism. Additionally, you will learn about the various tools and policies that governments use to stabilize economies and promote growth, such as fiscal policy, monetary policy, and international trade policy. The field also has a strong application of mathematics and statistics, especially through econometrics, which helps in empirical analysis.

You can also explore the different specializations within economics such as:

Development economics: which studies economic issues and policies related to underdeveloped and developing countries.
Environmental economics: which studies the economic impact of environmental policies and regulations
International economics: which studies trade and investment between countries and the international financial system.
Public economics: which studies the role of government in the economy, including tax policy and welfare programs.
Behavioral economics: which incorporates insights from psychology and other social sciences to study how people make economic decisions.
Economics also has strong connections with other disciplines, such as political science, sociology, and mathematics, which can also be valuable to explore.

I have had a long-standing interest in understanding how economies operate and how various economic systems and policies affect individuals, businesses, and governments. Seeing my parents budgeting for everything and observing the annual presentation of the budget by our honorable finance minister in parliament has further piqued my curiosity about the subject and encouraged me to delve deeper into its study.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

My motivation is my own struggles with the subject. I do not want anyone to feel the same way I felt; demotivated, helpless, and scared of examination.
  • How does your work help society?

Teaching plays a critical role in helping society by providing individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life. Through education, individuals can acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to pursue fulfilling careers, contribute to their communities, and make informed decisions about their lives. Beside teaching Economics in a NAAC-approved college, I am promoting the field of economics to underrepresented groups. As a volunteer online math tutor for e-Vidyaloka; a non-profit organization working to improve the education system in rural India, I have helped students improve their math skills. I promote social justice by providing students from all backgrounds with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in Economics courses, regardless of their educational background.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

Sir Richard Branson, also known as Robert Branson, is a highly successful entrepreneur and a role model for me. He is the founder of the Virgin Group, which has grown into a multinational corporation that includes companies in various industries such as music, airlines, telecommunications, and more.

One of the things that makes Branson my role model is his tenacity and willingness to take risks. He started Virgin as a small mail-order record business and turned it into a global brand. Throughout his career, he has been known for his willingness to think outside the box and to try new things, even when others thought he was crazy. He has set records for various feats such as crossing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in a hot-air balloon, which is a testament of his willingness to push the limits.

Another quality that makes Branson my role model is his focus on providing a positive customer experience. Virgin is known for its customer-centric approach, which has helped the company to gain a loyal customer base. Branson is a firm believer in the idea that happy customers are key to business success and his company has received numerous accolades for its commitment to customer service. Every day, I aspire to serve my students better.

Branson is also a philanthropist, and he has been involved in a number of charitable efforts, particularly in the areas of education and the environment. He has used his resources and influence to make a real difference in the lives of many people. He is a believer that with success comes responsibility, and he has taken that responsibility to use his success to make the world a better place.

I have learned perseverance, creativity, and commitment to serving customers and making a positive impact on the world, from him.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Reading, cycling, driving, Yoga and playing hide and seek with my 19 months-old niece :)
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

During my career in banking, I had an experience with an eleven-year-old boy who was deaf and mute and wanted to open an account with our branch. At the time, I was under the supervision of a manager who was unwilling to open the account due to the boy's disability. The boy appeared pale and sad about the rejection. Suddenly, something within me compelled me to give him some mathematical equations to solve on paper. The boy was delighted and solved them correctly. I gave him more questions, and I could see the glitter in his eyes as he solved them correctly. Eventually, his account was successfully opened at our branch. As he was leaving the bank premise, he came to touch my feet, an action that humbled me greatly. I realized I did not do something extraordinary, but that small act had a significant positive impact on the boy's spirits forever.
