About Miriam

Hello! I am a Foundation Year 1 doctor at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, having completed by medicine degree at Cambridge University. Alongside my medical degree, I hold a BSc (Hons) in Molecular Biology and an MA in Philosophy from the University of Sheffield.

During the medical school application process, I ranked in the top 4% of candidates at Cambridge. With a UCAT score of 3070 (2300 equivalent) Band 1, I have demonstrated my proficiency in the admissions test, a crucial component of the application process. Additionally, I am honoured to have been the recipient of the Ken C Griffin Charitable Fund Clinical Medicine Scholarship, awarded to me for academic achievements and my reflective account on why I aspire to be a doctor.

I am truly passionate about nurturing the next generation of doctors, instilling in them a focus on patient care, empowerment, and kindness. Together, we will enhance your admissions test scores, refine your interview techniques, and strengthen your overall application, all while ensuring an enjoyable and engaging learning experience.

I have extensive tutoring experience with both individual mentoring and small-group teaching, catering to students of all ages. Moreover, I have acquired valuable expertise in working with students who have ADHD, ASD, and ND, enabling me to adapt my teaching methods to suit their specific needs.

Please get in touch if you have any questions! I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

*Strategic Applications*

I have extensive knowledge of medical schools in the UK and their admissions criteria, and have helped students gain offers from medical schools with low UCAT scores, complicated situations, and specific criteria. If you're looking to apply strategically, I can offer a 1 hour session where I look through all your 'stats' and guide you on where you may want to apply for the best chances of gaining an offer.

*Personal Statements*

Crafting an outstanding personal statement is crucial, and we will work together to discuss your motivations, extracurriculars, and work experiences. Drawing on reflective accounts, we will create a compelling narrative that showcases your unique qualities and passion for medicine.

- Initial session discussing drive to study medicine, extracurriculars and work experience, drawing on reflective accounts
- Multiple weekly/biweekly subsequent sessions 1 hour commenting/30 minute discussion

*Personal Statement Reviews - £95*

It doesn't matter what stage you're at - send me your Personal Statement for a full review where I will help you make it stand out from the crowd. We will then have an optional discussion about your statement and what to work on. This is the time to be developing your reflections, crafting interesting narratives, and checking your grammar and character count.

*UCAT Assessments*

I offer a 1.5 hour session to assess a student's ability in the UCAT and send detailed feedback to the student after the session, commenting on weak and strong points, and how to target your preparation to do the best in the test.

*UCAT Tutoring*

- UCAT Assessments and Introductions: Understand your approach to questions and pinpoint strengths and weaknesses.
- Verbal Reasoning: Learn speed reading techniques and effective ways to approach complex texts.
- Decision Making: Master strategies to tackle common question types and enhance problem-solving skills.
- Quantitative Reasoning: Focus on problem areas, quick math methods, and build confidence in numerical reasoning.
- Situational Judgement: Gain insights into ethics, hospital structure, and receive feedback on your responses.

*Medicine Interview Training*

Medicine interviews are around the corner. Oxford and Cambridge will only be giving 1 or 2 weeks notice before an interview, so it's imperative that you start your preparations as early as possible. It is very obvious when students haven't prepared for their interviews. My interview preparation sessions cover a wide range of essential topics, including chemistry, biology, NHS structure, medical ethics, current affairs, reading academic articles, and literature. We will also focus on interview skills, conduct mock interviews (including MMI, panel interviews, Oxbridge-style interviews, and role-plays), and provide valuable feedback to refine your performance.

*Mock Interviews*

- A targeted mock interview with one or two assessors
- Specific to the university you have an interview invitation from
- Detailed feedback within the session, with opportunity to repeat answers

*Biology GCSE and A Level*

I work alongside a small team who cover all boards and specifications, and teach GCSE and A Level biology in a foundational way, focusing on understanding content rather than memorising.

Please note that the curriculum outlined above is highly flexible and can be adapted to suit your individual needs and focus areas.

As your tutor, I understand the challenges and stresses of the application process, and my goal is to make this journey easier for you. By providing strategic guidance and helping you gain a competitive edge, I aim to empower you to stand out among other applicants.

My teaching style is interactive and dialogue-based, ensuring that you fully comprehend the material and have ample opportunities to ask questions. Whether you have ADHD, ASD, or specific learning requirements, I am experienced in tailoring lessons to meet your unique needs and learning style.

Preparing for medical school is a significant endeavour, but with my support and expertise, you can confidently tackle each stage of the process. Let's work together to unlock your potential and make your dream of becoming a doctor a reality. Reach out to me today, and let's get started on this transformative journey!

-----

No Show/Latecomer Policy

I will wait 20 minutes for a student to turn up. If they fail to turn up after 20 minutes then the lesson will be cancelled. Usually this will mean you will be liable to full payment of the lesson as this is time I could have scheduled with another student. If a student is late to the session, I will not be able to extend the session and we will still finish at the agreed time.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

As a current medical student, I understand how daunting the process of applying to medical school is, and how hard to it is to prepare for the multiple aspects of the application. During my application, I spent a lot of time gathering resources about the UCAT, personal statement and interviews, and want to use my extensive knowledge of the process to help other passionate students shine in their application process.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor admissions for medical school, including the UCAT, interview knowledge and skills, and help with personal statements. Within this, my favourite topic to teach is medical ethics. I have an MA in Philosophy, which has given me the skills to be able to link ethical concepts to practical situations. Medicine is full of ethical dilemmas, and medical ethics forms a substantial chunk of most interviews, so having a core understanding of these topics is vital to succeed in your interview.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Not so much a teacher, but I have been inspired for a long time by Mae C. Jemison, who was a doctor, astronaut, engineer, dancer, and actor. A lot of people assume that when you become a doctor, that is you set for life, and you won't have time or energy to delve into other passions. Mae Jemison is a prime example that you can do anything you like with the right amount of appetite for it.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I am keen that the student does most of the talking, and I abide by the Socratic method of teaching. This means that I set up a dialogue with my students, continually questioning them to find their own answers rather than providing the answers outright. I spend most of the class listening to my students and driving the lesson towards where they struggle most. This is especially important with interview preparation, where practising the multitude of questions that could arise prepares the student more than merely reading about subjects that could come up.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Medicine is a difficult and intimidating path to choose, with extreme highs and extreme lows. Even with a core passion for the subject and the patients you work with, it is important to understand the realities of life as a doctor, and whether this is truly the right career for you. It is important to understand the challenges you might face in the medical field in your interview, whilst still maintaining the reasons you want to study the subject and how you can overcome these challenges, both professional and emotional.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I want to be an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, and had done for several years, before even starting medical school. I am extremely interested in the social aspects of gynaecology and women's health, especially the lack of education around vulval anatomy and health, the differences in health outcomes for men and women, and the inequality in maternal outcomes for women of different socioeconomic status and race.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I'm a very organised person, which means that I will have lesson plans for each of our sessions and will always send the notes from our sessions after we say goodbye, so that you can always look over what we have discussed. I will always be on time and bring a high level of energy to everything we do together.
