About Shreyash

I am a Data Scientist at Amazon, proficient in Economics and Machine Learning. Graduated from IIT Kanpur, completing my Bachelor's and Master's in Economics with a minor in Artificial Intelligence. I have tutored many students in my degree, also volunteered as a personal tutor for a visually disabled student, for econometrics. Teaching is my passion, and I like exploring concepts in great depth, as it contributes to the overall learning of the student, as well as makes it interesting.

I refer to textbooks as a general guideline, but I customize the interaction based on the conceptual understanding of the student, and try to build some context from real-life examples and common sense reasoning. As it gets interesting, the student is able to ask better doubts and take a more active role in his learning path.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

Economics is an interesting subject, with applications all across various domains in life. From personal decision making to policy making, our economic intuition helps understand the frameworks of why the decisions are made and how we can improve the outcome. I developed an interest in economics while studying game theory, which is the study of games and economic behaviour.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

I feel teaching is the best way to learn and think deeply about a subject. Tutoring helps me keep in touch with the basics and ask the key questions about the fundamental concepts in a subject. While trying to formulate the answers to those questions, you are reminded of the beauty of the subject, which attracts you towards it. Each student has a different journey towards learning a subject and your pedagogical approach develops with time. I am motivated by reading about the lives and intellect of Nobel laureates like Milton Friedman and polymaths like John Von Neumann.
  • How does your work help society?

Teaching as a career helps you create diverse learning paths for the students and identify resources which are useful in the journey of the student. It makes one realize that one doesn't stop learning post their education, it's a lifelong practice. As we interact with various students and parents, it increases our exposure to different viewpoints, motivations towards a field and pedagogical approaches required at different stages of life. I have had students from high school to mid-50s, and the experience differs with every one of them. We absorb their values and transmit not only our academic ideas but our social values as well. The discussions are quite constructive and make you think about the ideas fundamentally.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

I am very curious about the stoic philosophy and the great thinkers of enlightenment (late 18th century). From Aristotle being a tutor to Alexander the Great to Adam Smith tutoring the son of the Duke of Buccleuch, Henry Scott, history has given us great thinkers who not only passed on influential ideas to posterity, but also influenced history by tutoring great students. Teaching is indeed a noble and ancient profession.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I am an amateur astronomer. I spend my evenings observing the sky using my Newtonian reflector, looking at the planets and comets. I love reading science books in various domains that capture my curiosity. I also like cycling on weekends.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

People usually remember their first's. My first student was in my final year of economics masters, He was an econometrics student and he was visually disabled. I didn't have much experience tutoring. I used to explain the mathematical graphs and equations but drawing on their hand using my finger, and gave lots of examples and analogs for reference. That experience made me realize that learning has no bounds and is unconstrained. It is the will to seek knowledge that drives people to understand any concept, however complex. I feel I learnt more from the student than they did from me. (They got a B in econometrics :) . I have pursued tutoring from that day.
