Every student learns differently, and my role as a tutor is to adapt to each individual’s strengths, challenges, and learning style. I draw from a wide range of strategies—visual explanations, real-world examples, guided practice, and conceptual breakdowns—to ensure that each concept is both understood and retained.

Most sessions are centered around solving problems together, as this often reveals the most effective path forward. By identifying areas of strength and pinpointing where a student gets stuck, I can offer targeted guidance that builds confidence and mastery over time.

Whether we’re reinforcing classroom content, preparing for an exam, or tackling a particularly tough concept, I tailor each lesson to meet the student where they are and help them get where they want to go.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have loved mathematics for as long as I can remember; from a young age, my head was always in a math textbook. This passion naturally evolved into a love for science as I became older and began to see the application of the mathematical concepts I spent years learning. This culminated into my ultimate intellectual lifelong passion – Physics, where the fascinating complexities of the highest levels of mathematics are used to understand and explain the most fundamental properties of nature.

My interest in private tutoring sparked in high school as I often helped peers in my various classes, and even had the opportunity to tutor a faculty member during my senior year. This interest ignited into a flaming passion in 2019 when I started my first tutoring gig. Over the years, my love for individualized instruction has only deepened; it is reaffirmed with every connection I make with my students and the countless “Eureka!” moments that have piled up over the years.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I will always be fascinated with the interconnectedness of math and science. In math, the concepts learned in Algebra and Geometry lay the foundation for Trigonometry, Calculus, and beyond. In Physics and Chemistry (my most familiar topics), these mathematical systems are used as tools to understand nature and develop society. My favorite topic to discuss with students is the practicality and relevance of what they are learning. I also have a soft spot for calculus due to my Physics background.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

The teacher who inspired me the most is the one who spurred my love for Physics - Jason Bowen, my first Physics professor. Teaching entry-level physics at the local community college where I grew up, Professor Bowen is not only an excellent educator who dispelled the fear many students have around learning physics; his work at the community college also level shows a deep commitment to the community at large, earning him the Scholar in Residence award - the highest honor given to the school’s faculty. He is also the first and only Black STEM professor I’ve had across three collegiate institutions in two different states, providing me representation that very few Black Physics majors experience.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    (In no particular order):

    Passion

    Empathy

    Adaptability

    Life-long thirst for knowledge
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I had my first real experience as a tutor when I was a senior in high school earning credit as an office aide. The faculty at my small school knew I had finished calculus and had an affinity for helping other students, so I was asked if I could tutor one of the faculty members taking College Algebra as part of my office duties. Helping this adult get an A in her college class before I graduated high school solidified my confidence as an educator at a young age.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

One challenge that I’ve faced during my several years as an educator is getting to the “why” of many things that are simply given to students when we learn new topics. Encouraging my students to ask questions and pursue deep understanding has often revealed unknown gaps in my own knowledge because I took information at face value when I learned these topics many years ago. This is a challenge I embrace, as it whittles down my personal intellectual blind spots day-by-day.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for teaching topics that seem impossibly difficult for students where they are at (whether that topic is Algebra 1 or Multivariable Calculus). Oftentimes, the biggest obstacles to learning are a lack of confidence and/or a feeling of intimidation caused by perceived difficulty. Once a student has enough “Aha!” moments in a topic they felt they could never understand, they realize they are fully capable to learn that subject and beyond.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I am a Superprof because I have an unyielding commitment to the education of my students and the general public. No topic exists in isolation, and I pride myself in expanding my own knowledge every day so I can provide a perspective that goes beyond one specific lesson at a time. I encourage students to always ask the “why” behind the “what”, for this is how the mind is truly strengthened.
