With any ranking in sports, there's no way to be completely objective, as everybody has different criteria for greatness and what they appreciate. We've tried to account for the different demands placed on forwards, midfielders and defenders in hurling. We're looking to assess players by the overall shape of their careers rather than by a single headline statistic.
This ranking considers skill, major performances, honours, longevity and influence. No single statistic can identify the best hurlers of all time because players competed in different eras, positions and circumstances. The final order is an editorial assessment rather than an official GAA ranking.⁶
Legendary Hurlers Through the Decades
As any game changes, so do the greats. Early hurling was more physical and less structured, so their greats reflected that. Later generations, with improved coaching, equipment, and analysis, are more likely to be judged on more technical factors. Either way, every generation reflects the qualities that defined their eras.
Older players competed before modern conditioning and video analysis became central to inter-county preparation.⁵ The All-Star scheme did not begin until 1971, so it excludes earlier careers.³ Championship formats, tactics and equipment also changed over time.
