The biggest motivation in my own study of music has been the enthusiasm,
expertise and love of the arts as shared by my teachers. I have been a student of
music since the age of 5, and will never quit learning. I believe students are
motivated not only by developing proper musical technique through practice, but
also by learning from other aspects of life and culture and expressing those ideas
and emotions in the medium of music. As a music teacher, I want to give a voice
to ideas already present in the inner world of my students’ mind and emotions by
developing the skills necessary to communicate these ideas using music. Music
is said to speak where words fail us. It has been further demonstrated that as a
student begins to master musical concepts, he will also increase his aptitude in
learning other fields of study. (See research concerning the “Mozart Effect”, as
first studied in 1993 at the University of California, Irvine, by physicist Gordon
Shaw and Frances Rauscher, a former concert cellist and an expert on cognitive
development; or on the effects of music on the brain and behavior as presented
by Neil Slade, web site: (concealed information) ). I believe this gold mine of aptitude
exists inside everyone, ready to explore and develop for its best use and
purposes.
My purpose as an educator is to best equip the student to discover his/her own
learning style, its strengths and weaknesses, and to motivate him/her to become
an independent, lifelong learner. I have the professional knowledge necessary to
equip those choosing music as a career, or to enrich the lives and learning
process of those who do not follow this path. I hope to use this knowledge
responsibly to develop and discipline gifted students or to encourage the less
gifted to fully enjoy music as a compliment to a career they would successfully
pursue with excellence. Another goal of my teaching is to increase the student’s
appreciation and awareness of the role music plays in world history and the
global society. Even non-performers will be better prepared to live in today’s
world by learning to identify different types of music and its emotional or spiritual
connotation, as well as its significance in many different cultures and world views.
I believe in group instruction, because students and performers can identify their
strengths and areas needing more attention more readily in a group setting, and
will benefit from others’ views. As many cultures see music practice and
performance as a group activity rather than an individual effort, I desire to
prepare my students to experience music in this way.
Piano and keyboard gifts often develop the ability to play by ear, improvise, and
realize a lead sheet or a spontaneous arrangement. My greatest joy is to explore
and develop this gifting in my students so they may serve in spontaneous music
creation as well as by their diligence in studying music. My doctorate of musical
arts program in pedagogy allowed me to write a teaching plan and material that
aids the student in this development. It is a document that continues to live on,
being improved as students and colleagues share and allow me to contribute
contribute their most loved music and musicals creations.
