About Harriet
I'm a self-taught artist specialising in painting and print-making. I'm known for my expressive use of colour, and experimental way of working. I work a lot from the imagination and encourage my students to tap into theirs. My initial degree was in English Literature (grad Edinburgh 2017, 1st Class), this year I studied a Graduate Diploma in Fine Art at London City and Guilds Art School and am due to study my MA there in September. I love teaching - I've been teaching art for a year now, with a specific focus on painting as a tool for mindfulness (alongside tutoring English Literature/Lang for four years from GCSE to Undergraduate)

As I'm 25, I'm not much older than most of my students and I like to build a friendly rapport, with an ultimate aim to inspire my students to develop their own practice. My emphasis is always on helping people to find their own artistic voice, teaching both practical techniques and recommending ways into making, and research to further inform and shape their art practice (such as introducing to new artists that I think they'd like/books and other interesting things which might excite them)! I cater my lessons to suit each individual student's goals, but as an artist using more 'traditional' materials, I'm more of a teacher of practical art rather than conceptual. I'm all about finding innovative ways of using traditional materials and processes. I love teaching ways into creating art and in my lessons I always aim to think about exploring different ways of mark-making and use of colour to express a subject. I'm always open to teaching groups, it's great to get a dialogue going between everyone. I can give assistance and tutoring for any writing/essays.

Deadly! Harriet is absolutely lovely. She has helped me focus on what I need to do to improve. Has given me so many references and tips on colour and composition. The sessions are not only informative but really enjoyable.

As her tutor, I had the pleasure of teaching Harriet during her final year at Edinburgh. Harriet more than held her own in her talented cohort, and acquitted herself very well indeed in class. In my seminars she proved herself a highly intelligent, highly motivated student, capable of fulfilling all the tasks required of her with aplomb, and equipped also with the maturity and wit to take the initiative when necessary. Her critical analyses and interventions were a crucial part of the class’s intellectual development, and something on which I came happily to rely. This very valuable participation in class discussions was characterised by an ability to respond effectively to the contributions of others as much as by her own ability to articulate her own insights.
Her written work for my class was engaged, lively and properly organised, showing clear evidence of a capacity to articulate an argument in often intriguing, forceful and compelling fashion. She showed considerable initiative in developing the intellectual positions and arguments that she had fashioned in her preparation and in class into an impressive course essay, and followed this up with an excellent final assessment too. This was part of an overall performance which saw her achieve an entirely merited First Class Honours MA.
I have been consistently impressed by Harriet's willingness and capacity to test herself in new contexts and in the face of new demands. All these qualities are combined with an open and friendly disposition, a self-confidence which is hard-won, justified, but in no way hubristic, and the very evident commitment to achieving whatever goals she sets herself.View more recommendations
