How to continue improving your drawing

Practice is the magic word on how you can keep learning as an artist and improving your work. Through practice you will be able to apply and master the techniques that you have learnt and you will also be able to develop your own techniques that work for you. You will also be able to learn from your own work, successes and mistakes and overtime, all of this will all help you to become better at drawing.

Taking inspiration from other work and being exposed to different styles and drawings will give you a wider range of examples to draw from when creating your own. It's also good to continue exploring, it's completely normal to have your preferred drawing styles and methods but taking the effort to sometimes do something else, be that using different materials, different subjects or a different drawing style all together. By not always doing the same thing you will still give yourself the chance to potentially learn something new as well as keeping your motivation and interest high.

It's also advised to challenge yourself now and again, by deciding to depict something that you don't have a lot of experience drawing, or something that you find difficult to draw accurately. By making mistakes and seeing where we need to make improvements, you can identify aspects of your drawing that you can work on and focus on that so that you can become a better artist.

Who are online drawing classes suited for?

Online learning can be very convenient due to no longer needing to travel somewhere to be able to do your lessons and learn something, making it easier to find the time and inclination to do some learning and improving.

Our tutors around the country all offer in-person classes but they are also happy providing online classes for students that prefer them or who find them more convenient. This also means that even if a particular tutor that caught your eye lives on the other side of the country you can still benefit from their instruction.

If you already have a base of knowledge and experience in drawing and you want some specific help with a particular technique or skill then being able to quickly arrange for a few lessons can be very convenient and this can be done via our online classes.

What are the basic skills that you need to have or improve for drawing?

Either for when you are starting out with your drawing journey or you have years of experience, here are some skills that you need to hone and continue to practice so that your drawing is as good as can be. Having a solid understanding of perspective will allow you to better represent the 3D subject that you are trying to translate onto your page. Working on this skill is necessary as it's needed for being able to accurately show the perspective and proportions of different objects in the same drawing and being able to do this well is important due to people's innate ability to easily tell if it seems off. Even if people can't recognise it instantly, many of us would quickly notice if the perspective of an object isn't as it should be due to all of the real-world examples of perspective that we see every single day.

Knowing how to choose the colours that will depict your subject in the most efficient way can go a long way to improving the quality of a drawing. By knowing how to choose the right colours that suit your intention, you will be able to convey different meanings and emotions to your pieces, adding to their overall depth and quality.

Anatomy of humans is always something good to spend a lot of time working on as even if we are depicting something realistic or something from fantasy, odds are there will be a human in it at some point. Again, just like perspective, since we are people if a human isn't drawn accurately, we will easily and quickly notice. Being able to understand the workings of the human body, the skeleton, the muscles and how all of these affect the skin during movements.
