About Lucy
Hey! My name's Lucy, I'm an entrepreneur and maths geek who wants to share what she knows with you.
When I was studying, I found it really hard to care because my teachers weren't very good and they turned the subject I love, maths, into a chore.
That is the one thing I can guarantee I'm not going to do for you!
What is un-boring maths?
To me, maths is a language with which we can communicate the complexity and intricacy of reality and meaning, but like any language, it takes effort and consistency to attain fluency.
If you see and teach maths as a science of numbers, quantity, and space, lessons are bound to be boring and dull because there's no reason to learn. There is no value in Pythagoras' Theorem alone. It only becomes valuable and engaging in context.
Maths becomes fun when it matters, which is why I always try to teach maths in context and show how it is being used by scientists and mathematicians today.

Focused attention addressing the gaps in your maths knowledge, creating quick results.
Time and practice develop self-education skills vital for life and career success.
My Process -
Maths to me is rather like a maze. Some of it you'll know and have mapped while some of it you won't know, which goes for every individual studying maths, even professors. I believe it is my job as your tutor not to simply teach you maths (that's boring), but to teach you how to confidently self-navigate the parts of maths you don't know.
Life after school as an employee turned entrepreneur has taught me it's not your current ability that matters, it's your ability to be responsible for your own education. The most successful, by traditional and modern measures, are the ones that continue to learn by becoming their own teacher and that is a skill I hope to help you develop through my teaching style.
In the first free lesson, we'll go through your syllabus and I'll assist you in marking red, yellow, and green each part according to how confident you are about what it is and how to do it. We'll also set goals, a timeframe, and a schedule for the following lesson(s). If there is time, we'll get started on a mini-lesson because there's no time like the present! (If you want more time for the mini-lesson, consider doing the confidence scale for each point of your syllabus before the lesson )
One way I keep it un-boring, is I don't do homework, I do pre-work: I will give you a challenging task to complete before the lesson, on a topic highlighted in either yellow or red on the confidence scale, which we haven't covered in our lessons before because greatest learning occurs through the greatest struggle. The point is for you to take your learning into your own hands and pre-work will give you the perfect environment to practice being your own teacher which will serve you best in later life.
(By taking the time before the lesson to grapple with the topic you will find answers and solutions yourself without the need of a teacher or tutor. You'll get used to hard work reaping rewards and build your ability to self-navigate the maze of math or a maze of any subject for that matter.)
However, you'll never be alone! The challenge will identify where in the problem you're getting stuck or confused, then, when you come to the lesson, I'm not showing you what you already know (BORING). instead, I'll support your self-education addressing the problem you're struggling with.
This process means we'll make progress quickly because all our time will be spent addressing gaps in your knowledge, not recapping classes with your teachers. With focused attention creating quick results, you'll enjoy maths and be empowered to work more because who doesn't like to succeed?]
To conclude my process is challenging, empowering, supportive, and especially not boring.
In my lessons I use zoom and, assuming your parent or guardian agrees, I will record and send the lessons to you with a summary of what we went through so you can go back through again if you want a refresh. I have an online whiteboard tool to sketch diagrams and write out solutions and I also have a Quizlet class with key terms and equations for you to learn out of class.
Also, at the end of every lesson, I'll give you the opportunity to provide feedback on what you like and don't like to further personalise our lessons to your preferences so you can enjoy the lessons as much as possible.
On a monthly basis, I will provide small report cards on your progress.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
My child was really struggling with some of the content in their math's class recently and I was sceptical at first as to whether a math's tutor would be a worthwhile investment. My child is now working ahead of their class and I couldn't be happier. We're now looking into other tutors for other subjects because of them.
Lucy is a truly brilliant teacher! She listens and addresses the major concerns while recognising and working on minor concerns that perhaps the student doesn't realise. Her years of experience teaching teenagers in multiple subjects and sports is why I believe she is such a great teacher. 100% recommend.
