About Yannik

I'll help you build a rock-solid foundation, foster confidence, and develop the problem-solving skills required to excel. With my support, you'll not only master the material, but also develop a deeper appreciation for statistics and math. =================================

I hold a Doctorate in Statistics from UC Berkeley and a Bachelors Cum Laude with Honors in Math from Harvard. During my time at Berkeley, I taught multiple statistics courses such as statistical inference, probability theory, and optimization. My specialties are applied statistics, probability theory, theoretical statistics, stochastic processes, biostatistics, actuarial science, machine learning, and optimization.

Currently, I am a data scientist at Google where I work on projects pertaining to data mining, time series analysis, causal inference, and hypothesis testing.

Lastly, I have tutored students and professionals in all areas of statistics for the past decade. And I also consulted researchers on the statistical components of their work during that time as well. Most recently, I aided a client with hypothesis testing using ANOVA for her psychology dissertation, which got published.
=================================

My style is unique in that I teach concepts via storytelling. For example, do you know why we talk about rejecting the null hypothesis when the p-value is sufficiently small? Does this sound like a foreign language? Now what if I told you this scenario? Assume that Lionel Messi is a much better soccer player than you. And say you won against Messi in 1v1 ten times in a row. Beating Messi the GOAT in a game of 1v1 ten consecutive times would have such a low probability of occurring (p-value) due to chance that you would reconsider the "null hypothesis" that Messi is a better player (unless he was taking it easy against you). See how much easier this was to grasp?
=================================

I also tutor in math and computer science up to the undergraduate level.

And upon special request, I can also tutor for the SAT and ACT math portions.

Standardized Test Scores: SAT I Math: 800/800 SAT II Math: 800/800 ACT Math: 36/36 GRE Quant: 169/170 SOA/CAS Exam P/1: Passed SOA/CAS Exam FM/2: Passed

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

    I've been interested in math since I was a five year old. I remember one day I was at home watching The Price is Right game show and I became fascinated by the numbers on display. My interest went into overdrive by middle school. I got exposed to topics outside of the standard MS/HS math sequence that piqued me further. For example, I read this book
    Geometry Revisited as a freshman and became fascinated by how concepts were so connected. I got into statistics in undergrad after taking a probability class and ended up completing my PhD in statistics, which is now my forte.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    I mainly teach statistics, but I can also teach mathematics and computer science at an advanced level. I like demonstrating that statistics and math aren’t as scary as everyone says.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

    My role models are my parents and myself. I think I’ve done a lot to be where I am today and I deserve my success. Some others who have inspired me include the following:
    - Dr. Joe Blitzstein from undergrad
    - Ms. Johnson (RIP) from middle school who sparked my interest in math and got me to join Mathcounts
    - Dr. Peter Bartlett who was my PhD advisor
    - Ms. Jada Golden “Educator at Large”, one of the most sought after teachers in the US, who has been an excellent mentor and taught me how to manage the personal relationships between me and my students
    - Satoshi Suga who has gone beyond tutoring to running full-scale enrichment programs
    I've been very lucky to have patient teachers and advisors in my life.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    Knowledgeable to the level where one can ask good “leading questions” that make the student think, patient, encouraging.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

    During my doctorate program, I was stuck on proving a crucial conjecture for my dissertation. I spent weeks, if not months, on it, but couldn't seem to get anywhere. Frustrated, I decided to take a break and play futsal one day. Surprisingly, during the game, I had an epiphany about the problem. The strategy and patterns in futsal helped me see the research problem in a new light. This taught me a valuable lesson about looking at challenges from different perspectives. This experience shaped my approach to teaching, where I encourage students to draw connections between different subjects and hobbies to enhance their understanding of statistics and math.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

    One of the biggest challenges I face in teaching math is addressing the varying levels of foundation among students. Some students have a strong grasp of basic concepts, while others struggle with them. This disparity can make it challenging to keep lessons engaging and effective for everyone. To address this, I've developed a tiered approach to teaching, where I provide different levels of problem sets and encourage peer-to-peer tutoring within the class. This not only helps students at different levels but also fosters a collaborative learning environment.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    When it comes to teaching and tutoring, my passion lies in the moment a student has the 'aha!' moment – when a concept they've been struggling with suddenly clicks. This is why I love teaching statistics (and math). The subject often gets a reputation for being tough, but witnessing students overcome their challenges and develop a love for math and stats is incredibly rewarding. I enjoy inspiring confidence and a love for learning in my students. And I especially enjoy tutoring discrete math, statistical inference, and probability.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

    I’m very good at what I do and I make sessions fun. But I don’t need to say that – other people can speak for me :). I received awards for my teaching skills during my time in school.
