About Daniel

I am a Theoretical Computer Scientist and Science Educator, with over 7 years of university teaching experience, and overall more than a decade of experience in educating students of all ages. Amongst this, I have over 5 years of experience as a tutor in subjects around the mathematical sciences (Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, and some Physics). Most of my experience tutoring is at the high-school level and post-secondary level. I am offering my tutoring services in Mathematics (all levels, inquire more for details about my specialties; I have tutored Pre-Calculus several times in the past, and university courses in Calculus and Discrete Mathematics [I prefer the latter, I have taught courses on the subject]), and Computer Science (all levels, most subjects I would be comfortable being approached about tutoring, but for your bang for buck, come see me if you need help learning about the mathematics/theory of Algorithms (e.g. Data Structures, Algorithms Analysis)). Presently I create free or accessible Computer Science Education materials, providing private educational services, my academic duties and research, and am also developing a computer game.

I have had the pleasure of working for universities such as St. Francis Xavier University, The University of Western Ontario (Western University), and The University of Manitoba. I have worked in the past as a University Professor (Computer Science, Theory), Lecturer, and Instructor at these institutions. In addition I've worked as an inclusion specialist in childcare years ago, and have ample experience working with elementary and middle-school students as a science educator for educational programs for institutions such as the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada and Mad Science of Manitoba.

I tutor Computer Science and Mathematics. In particular, my expertise as both an educator and researcher is in Theoretical Computer Science. I have taught university courses in:
-Data Structures and Algorithms [I have authored a book on this topic]
-Analysis of Algorithms
-Discrete Mathematics (Discrete Structures)
-Introductory Programming (e.g. Python, Java)
-General Computing Literacy
-Computing Applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

I welcome students and people wishing to learn at all levels (including primary and secondary school) on subjects of Mathematics and Computer Science. Among the above topics, I can also tutor programming languages, just contact me and I can inform you if I feel comfortable covering the topic.

At the present time I am tutoring remotely only, so I can take clients from anywhere. I tutor in English and communicate written/orally only in English. I place strong emphasis on writing & reasoning abilities/justifications, and providing English supplemental materials. I provide an inclusive, high-energy & exciting, but incredible meticulous and detail-oriented educational environment.

Have a beautiful day!

My teaching is a hybrid of unorthodox and traditional, in different senses: Traditional in that, whenever possible, I prefer the traditional lecture style where students write notes and I deliver the lecture on a board, as getting students writing tends to improve their learning. Unorthodox in that I deliver high-energy lectures where I use a combination of unconventional metaphors, a down-to-earth approach that is somewhat informal, and inject my lectures with a small element of humour and educational entertainment. I adapt many strategies I have used successfully in my work over the past ten plus years with students of all ages, I discuss those experiences, inside and outside of academia in the Teaching Responsibilities section. My standards for teaching were obtained through years of direct, practical experience. I have a great deal of respect for the material I teach, and try to tune my material carefully to students on the spot. To increase the engagement of students in the material, I like to marry the formal lecture environment with a positive, high-energy classroom environment. I value strongly consistent expectations for all students and academic excellence, and strive to promote rigour and formal skills in the classroom whenever feasibly appropriate.

Clear and direct expectations are a large part of how I establish a positive and inclusive classroom environment. For example, when discussing a topic, I might explain how researchers or practitioners use a concept and state what I expect the students to be able to do after using some examples. I try to make my classroom environment a transparent place where students can ask questions without feeling inadequate, and a classroom where I try to reach out to all the students in the class directly using active learning. For example, I might get the class to work together with me to derive an algorithm I want to teach them, or have the class help walk through some parts of a mathematical analysis. Depending on the type of course, I might stick to the traditional lecture setting, or use a mixed-media approach.

The two people I have to thank the most for developing my style of teaching are my Father, Michael William Page (1956-2010), and my former co-worker and children's entertainer Chris Parsons a.k.a. Chris without the Hat. My Father was a natural orator and able to discuss sometimes complicated ideas with zero preparation, and I spent plenty of time over the years around him to observe how to engage effectively with people. I worked with Chris Parsons at the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada where I learned some of his strategies for engaging with an audience, he gave me quite a bit of advice on improving my presentation style. I generally believe educating children (especially outside of school hours) is considerably more challenging than adults at a university level, as university students have an obligation to listen. I believe in meeting students in the middle by providing engaging lessons that are participatory and invite students to engage with the material as I, the lecturer, guide them through sometimes complex ideas. I am always looking for methods to refine my craft in teaching, so I must also acknowledge all my former co-workers or peers for their insightful feedback over the years.

I offer a free 30 minute meeting (the first free lesson, mentioned), to figure out the needs of the client/student/person. This meeting will be done in the setting where I will conduct tutoring, so clients can be assured of the quality of my work and we can discuss needs of a client. This meeting can be conjoined into a singular arrangement (where 30 minutes plus session per hour, where remainder is paid), or we do the meeting first, then decide to continue with paid sessions.

I only offer at this time lessons remotely. My lessons are done in a semi-professional studio with semi-professional video equipment (not just a webcam, I mimic an educational setting expected from a professor). My setup is similar to a classroom or lecture hall, but I can switch to be in front of a computer or use props as well.

My rate is based on my expertise & experience, time for setup of my lecture/lesson area, and time to prep/provide supplemental materials to accompany lessons, when appropriate. As should be expected from a tutor, I like to prepare materials for my clients that we can go through, as opposed to do homework assigned from a teacher [to avoid conflict of interests, and potential plagiarism concerns]; however, I am more than happy to go through already marked materials [that are not subject to re-grading] to review from a client. As a strong proponent of educational accessibility for all, I am welcome to negotiations on my rate, based on needs of a client, longevity of arrangement, or subject area.

If you would like to arrange sessions outside of SuperProf, please using your search engine look me up at Daniel R. Page or PageWizard Games, Learning & Entertainment.
