Math and Stats aren’t the easiest subjects to get through, and if you’re coming into a compulsory math/stats unit without much of a math background it could very well look like you’re trying to learn a foreign language. The fact that it all builds on earlier topics covered, means that by a couple of weeks in, you could be feeling left quite behind very quickly. And not only that, a lot of seemingly unrelated fields like psychology or marketing require an understanding of statistics and math that probably wasn't expected. The good news is that by breaking it down and explaining it in a way that makes sense for anyone (regardless of prior math experience), what was once very intimidating now doesn’t seem that difficult at all! As a tutor with over 7 years of experience helping students achieve the marks and understanding they desire, I'm able to help busy students get on top of their material as stress free as possible. During my time studying some very difficult units, I found summarizing my notes with flow charts and breaking problems down into small steps helped greatly. And I’ve found that helping students with this technique really translates well with tutoring. It helps students greatly in understanding the fundamentals of the material and accelerates the progress, cutting back on the frustrating hours being spent trying to learn it solo. A recent focus of my tutoring has been on helping undergraduate and postgrad students in biostatistics, mostly for public health units. In addition to that and the standard undergrad math/stats subjects (psych stats, calculus, linear algebra etc.) I’ve also tutored a number of people looking to sit the GMAT exam to get into business school and students sitting the defense force entrance exam. My main strength as a tutor lies in the fact that I’m very patient with students and I can explain the concepts from different angles until it sinks in. I’m a problem solver that likes to break down a concept and explain it as simply as possible. If you need help or have any questions, feel free to contact me and see how I'm able to assist you in your studies!

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first developed an interest in tutoring in when I offered to help a university friend out who was having difficulty with some statistics. It turned out I enjoyed it a lot and was able to help a lot more than either of us expected. From there my passion for it just grew and grew as I started advertising my services and helping more and more people
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

The main subject I teach is statistics and specifically biostatistics. It's basically a way of applying statistics to health research and seeing what affects diseases and health and separating random variability from actual effects. I like to really break it down into something very simple and look at it from different angles until it sinks in for the student.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Shout out Mrs Blackwood! She taught me that there's no such thing as a silly question and that patience and perseverance pays off!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, first and foremost. A lot of the material is quite difficult when you encounter it for the first time, so even though I've seen the subject material a 1000 times, I always put myself in place of the student and try and see it for the first time with them to see where their understanding is coming from and what's giving them difficulty. I guess add to that empathy! After that, I think it's very important to be understanding and kind (it's an honour and a privilege to be able to help someone learn something). Finally being able to break down a problem into its simplest components really helps in allowing someone to understand and fully grasp something.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school. And, What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

I failed a maths unit during my time at uni. It was called Chaos theory (lived up to its name!), and I hadn't done the recommended prerequisites which really hurt me. Add to that teachers that weren't necessarily interested in making sure the students understood the material and I end up getting 49% overall. It was devastating at the time and put me back a semester but ended up being one of my most valuable lessons and I'ms so grateful for it. It taught me so much, especially how NOT to learn (and with that how to learn effectively).
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love research. I love breaking down something complex into its building blocks. I mainly do this through flowcharts and other visual aids. And I love then explaining these things to other people and the satisfaction I get when they understand it is so rewarding. That's why I love tutoring so much!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

My ability to relate to my students and tailor my sessions to their own unique learning style and preferences.. coupled with my love of learning and breaking down complex things into simpler things.
