About Jacqueline
I have a BSc in Psychology and Education, a Diploma in Primary Maths Education and an NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headship). I taught in a wide range of schools before holding three headships and spent ten years as a visiting lecturer in Maths on the Primary PGCE course at Leicester university. I have an enhanced DBS check and can provide references from education professionals.
I spent time in Finland researching their teaching methods, especially in maths and developed an approach in my own school which led to consistently high results (consistently in the top few schools for KS2 SATs results in the city). This approach is based on pre tests and post tests every lesson to identify gaps in learning and address these by tailoring learning to the child’s needs.
I break down learning into small steps ensuring children have the chance to learn new concepts through practical experience before moving onto pictorial then more abstract activities.
My educational philosophy has always focussed on meeting individual needs, whether these are related to specific abilities or particular special needs. Even the brightest children face challenges, including social relationships or being appropriately challenged, but we now also benefit from a growing awareness and knowledge of special needs.
Children need to feel safe and happy to learn. Whether teaching individuals or a group, I focus on developing positive relationships and self belief alongside an excitement and enthusiasm for learning. Teaching and learning is about how, not just what, children learn so they can thrive, develop and flourish as lifelong learners.
Children who are struggling may well catch up in time, but early and carefully planned support will ensure they have the best chance to achieve their potential. Equal opportunity is about providing every child with the support they need to do this. Parents and children should see this extra support as an entitlement to help them succeed—not as a failure.
Parents also need to understand their child’s journey so they can be partners in their learning, so I aim to involve them from the beginning. Lessons may include follow up activities if parents wish and a clear record of progress is shared with the child and parents throughout, linked to the national curriculum so you can see how it fits in with their school work.
Most of all, I aim to make the experience a positive one for your child. Learning should be fun. Children should see their own progress so their confidence grows and they are better able to engage with their long term education and achieve their goals.

I offer tuition primarily for ages 7 to 11 but will consider ages outside this range if appropriate. I have 40 years experience as a teacher (ages 4 to 18), maths specialist and primary headteacher and, whilst I am enjoying retirement, I miss the engagement with children and the chance to use my skills.
I’ve seen at first hand the impact COVID has had on so many children, including my own grandchildren. So many missed out on the essential foundations to learning of social interaction and practical experience, leading to problems when they try to build on weak foundations and often a lack of confidence and high anxiety levels..
I have worked to develop an approach to individual tuition to help children catch up and fill the gaps left by time out of school.
Lessons begin with a pretest, to establish children's current understanding, then provide tailored activities taking children from practical concepts to more abstract ideas, using fun, engaging exploratory activities designed to give children experience of success. A post test measures progress and identifies future learning needs, as well as giving children positive feedback to build confidence. Follow up activities can be included if parents wish.
Lessons can be one hour or longer (with a break included) and where possible, face to face sessions can be provided to start a programme of learning and in the longer term where appropriate.
Tuition may be short term focussed on a particular topic or prior to tests, or longer term to cover a broader range of learning. I'm also happy to work with parents to support home tuition or to support with SEND.
