Teaching Approach & Lesson Structure

I teach via Zoom, using a drawing tablet to seamlessly navigate multiple screens and optimise lesson time. My sessions are highly interactive, incorporating video resources and diagrams to create a visually engaging learning experience.

Our initial meeting will focus on understanding the student’s goals and perspective on mathematics, allowing me to tailor lessons to their needs. After the first lesson, we will review any areas of difficulty and collaboratively develop a structured plan for the coming weeks. My teaching prioritises problem-solving and improving clarity in written mathematics, essential for exam success.

I encourage regular practice between sessions, and students are welcome to bring challenging problems to discuss. This approach ensures lessons remain relevant and targeted, helping students build confidence in tackling difficult concepts. In my experience, students who consistently achieve top grades are those who come prepared for each session.

Experience & Teaching Style

I have three years of experience tutoring GCSE and A-level students since graduating from the University of Nottingham in 2021. My teaching style is friendly and informal, fostering a stress-free and supportive environment where students feel comfortable engaging with challenging concepts.

Lessons are available as one-hour or two-hour sessions, striking a balance between learning new material and maintaining productivity.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I became interested in science when I was thirteen. At the time, I had two major influences that made science, especially physics, seem exciting: my GCSE physics teacher and the release of the Christopher Nolan film Interstellar—a brilliant film, where the story is driven by the limitations and speculations of the theory of general relativity!

My introduction to teaching came during my third year of university. Around my lectures, I tutored A-level physics and in the evening I helped coach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I discovered I had a natural ability to explain difficult concepts and loved to see that “eureka!” moment when my students finally grasped a concept that had previously been beyond their reach.

I finished university and went travelling around Central America for six months, teaching English remotely to make money. I spoke with interesting people from all over the world and experienced teaching in another field. The variety of experiences I have had has made me a more versatile and dynamic tutor. I’ve been teaching physics and mathematics full-time since September 2022 and it has only made me more excited and eager to continue and improve.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Maths makes sense. It may be complex and difficult to learn, but with patience and focus you will begin to understand. The fog of frustrated confusion clears and the view is nothing short of breathtaking.

Basically, I love maths. If I had to choose a favourite field, however, it would be topology. My dissertation at university was on the topic of the ‘Hopf Fibration’ a non-trivial fibre bundle that can be projected into 3-space. What on gods mostly blue earth does that mean? Without the jargon, this is a method by which a hypersphere (sphere in 4 dimensions) can be visually seen in three dimensions. Like the shadow of a globe can be seen as a circle on a wall, the shadow cast by a hypersphere will be a 3-dimensional shape!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My physics teacher, Mr O’donnell, stands out. He saw that I was interested and made an effort to stoke the flames of that interest. He encouraged me to engage in extracurriculars, so I began to go to a variety of lectures at the Royal Institute in London with two like-minded friends. Not long after I was applying to study mathematical physics at University!
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, genuine subject enthusiasm, and experience.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My friend Patrick and I were camping outside of Madrid in summer ‘21 when we came across a pack of hungry dogs. They came bounding towards us, teeth bared. We had only moments to get our shoes on and run. Luckily a few years prior we had both attended a lecture on knot theory and knew the mathematically most efficient way to tie shoelaces — which you can see here. Skip to 14:35. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wAaI_6b9JE&ab_channel=TheRoyalInstitution—I tied my laces thusly and dashed to safety. Unfortunately, Patrick had forgotten how to do it and so was eaten by dogs. Bye bye, Patrick.

Only Joking, I made that whole thing up. Well actually we did get chased by dogs in Spain, but luckily we both had shoes on.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

How to study effectively. I struggled during my A Levels and at university to effectively learn content quickly enough. I wanted to understand things deeply and spent too much time digging through the details and not enough time completing the requirements of the course. What I have come to believe is that it is often necessary to accept a superficial understanding of things and move on, in fact, It is often beneficial to do so. In the world of elite-level sports, there is a concept called, “randomised drilling” where coaches will get their athletes to practise a new technique in conjunction with other similar movements within the same set. Researchers discovered that this method actually facilitates faster development than simply doing the new movement over and over again. I think this is a great analogy for learning new concepts in mathematics too. You should not expect yourself to understand a new concept deeply straight away. Instead, accept a superficial understanding and move on to another similar concept. When you then come back to the original concept you were trying to learn you will deepen your original understanding because you have now seen how it works in conjunction with other similar mathematical ideas.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I’m passionate about learning and want to be the best at what I do. I love studying mathematics, and hope one day to go back into academia. Outside of teaching, I’m a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor and coach. Teaching is something I feel I have a proclivity for, and find it incredibly satisfying, for both tutoring maths and coaching sports.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I know a lot and care a lot about the subject I teach, and it is a privilege to share it with my students.
