About Sam
I'm a 34-year-old man in North Carolina. I've been tutoring full-time for the past year. Once I was a physics Ph.D. student, where I TAed for introductory physics courses. I eventually left that program to work as a software engineer and then a data scientist in NYC for a number of years, before recently moving back home to North Carolina. I've always been interested in learning and teaching. I've often felt like the way we're taught was a great disservice to the many students to whom math and physics did not come as easily as to me—which is how I've come to be so opinionated about education. My tutoring approach is informed by my years of self-study, my writing practice, and also by, of all things, my many years of classical piano lessons, where I had the opportunity to observe the *art* of skillful (and sometimes unskillful) teaching from true experts.

There's a "right way" to learn math and physics. You stare down an unfamiliar problem; you search for a similar example; you try it out for yourself. Rinse and repeat—and at some point the pattern just "clicks" in your mind. The brain, almost passively, begins to recognize and understand. This is what works. It can feel strange—it doesn't feel at all like "working hard". But once you've seen it work, you'll be convinced. It takes time, and it can't be rushed, but a patient approach and prudent choices of problems can help this learning process to occur quickly and without stress. Teaching, I think, involves careful steering and emotion-management through this process. I listen carefully so as to observe your thinking, and aim to I can guide your attention along the path at a patient, exploratory pace. Often this requires slowing you down, or even backtracking to the point where you outpaced your confident understanding. But it's worth it—whatever you learn properly you'll know *confidently*. In this way I've had students who were never "math people" start acing every quiz and test—to their own surprise! I teach high school and early college math, physics, and programming. I particularly enjoy working with students for whom STEM is an emotionally-fraught subject, and for whom the regular methods of classroom education never seem to be a good fit, or are hard to take seriously.
