FAQ's

📚 What core concepts do history students need to understand?

Studying history effectively means understanding the key ideas that historians use to interpret events and sources.

  • Evidence and sources: Historians base their arguments on evidence drawn from documents, artefacts, and records, assessing their context and credibility.
  • Continuity and change: Understanding what changed across periods and what remained constant helps reveal the forces shaping society.
  • Cause and effect: Events rarely have a single cause — history students learn to identify multiple factors and trace their consequences.
  • Significance: Not all events are equally important — students learn to judge what mattered most and why, based on evidence and context.
  • Perspective and empathy: Understanding how people in the past viewed their world, given their circumstances, is essential to fair historical analysis.

With these foundations solid, tackling Leaving Cert or Junior Cycle history becomes far more manageable.

💰 What's the average price for history classes in Cork?

A private history lesson in Cork costs approximately €19/h.

Pricing can vary based on:

  • The level of study (secondary school, third level, or adult learning)
  • The teacher's expertise and background
  • The package you choose (one-off session or regular grinds)
  • The lesson format (online, at home, or at the tutor's location)

Comparing several profiles helps you find the best value for your budget.

🎯 How can you improve at history?

Getting better at history comes down to active engagement with the material, not passive revision.

  • Active note-taking: Rather than copying notes, paraphrase what you read — it deepens understanding and improves recall in exams.
  • Essay practice: Writing structured essays regularly is the single most effective way to prepare for history exams, especially at Leaving Cert level.
  • Timelines and mind maps: Creating visual timelines helps you place events in sequence and understand the broader flow of a period.
  • Past exam papers: Working through past questions familiarises you with the format and reveals the types of analysis examiners reward.

Following a consistent study plan leads to real progress over a relatively short time.

Why do some students struggle with secondary school history?

History is full of content, you have to learn about the context of subjects, dates, important figures, developments in technology and the chronological order of things! It can be a lot to handle for any secondary school student. It can also be a lot more than just learning about all those things too, sometimes we are asked to analyse why things happened a certain way, or sometimes history borders on philosophy with the way questions can be asked. Students have to think, decide on their opinions, argue those opinions and then back up those arguments with robust evidence and logic. This can be very challenging for students especially if they thought history would be a “doss”. So, history can be very difficult for many students, what's the solution?

A tutor can help students overcome the challenges

History involves a lot of reading and usually two thick textbooks, it’s even recommended by most history teachers to read outside of the assigned chapters. A history tutor can guide a student to excellent sources to learn more about the topics, they can warn students about bias or potential errors. When it comes to essays (which history has a lot of), tutors can help you practice these. History students are often not given enough practice during school or for homework with essays, so a tutor can provide more practice questions and will be able to correct them and give useful feedback. The essays are one of the most important parts of the Irish history exam after all. Lastly, a lot of questions can arise while studying history, and a lot of new topics get covered which often leads to many questions and confusion. However, the curriculum is large and there is often not a lot of time in Irish classes which means every individual might not get the time they need to fully understand an event. A tutor will provide this time and attention.

Cork is brimming with history

The RSR(Research Study Report) is a long essay which is written for the leaving cert and is thought to be one of the hardest parts of LC history. However, Cork provides many opportunities for unique and engaging RSR topics. If you live in cork you will be a short drive/walk away from some of the most significant events in Irish history and there will be plenty of historical sources to draw from. For example, Cork was a centre of a lot of violence during the Irish war of independence from Britain. A lot of the city was in fact burned down by British troops in 1920 and the IRA operated heavily in and around the city. Cork was also part of the short-lived Munster republic during the Irish Civil war before being captured in 1922 by a naval landing! These two short examples really highlight the historical richness of the city.

Prepare for the exam with a Superprof tutor

There are many elements to the history leaving cert exam and it is one of the longest exams. All of this means is that students are required to do a lot of practice and revision before finally sitting it. A tutor will provide the discipline and the tools needed to do all this work. Tutors have a lot of experience with helping with exams and most importantly they went through the exams themselves! With an experienced teacher behind your back, you’ll be able to feel more confident in yourself and you will have to put in the time and extra work to do well in the exam. A normal teacher may be able to provide some of this but they may not have the time, patience or even desire to put in as much work as a personal tutor will, not to mention a tutor will be working 1-1 with you as a student. They will learn how best to teach you and help you with history.
