The internet is chock-a-block of articles and blogs saying how you need to learn a second language but, do any of them have any merit? Well, in my opinion, the answer is a clear yes. Languages afford you new opportunities, to connect and to learn. Learning Irish, especially in Carlow is great for this. We live in an era where the Irish government is trying to foster the Irish language through education and courses. Think of all the people you could meet along the way as you learn. There are roughly 80,000 native Irish speakers and several more who can speak the language. You’ll be able to participate in all these communities and achieve more in school/college. Even teach courses if you want to.
Gaeilge is a Goidelic language, or more broadly, a Celtic language. English is a Germanic language with romance “notes”. This makes Irish a very different language from English or even french. Each language has its strengths and its weaknesses in terms of descriptions, language features and other things. With each new language, your brain has a wider range of perspectives and cultural perspectives. Essentially, by learning Irish or any other language, you’ll become a more well-rounded person!
There are multiple ways of learning a language. There are the traditional classes and courses that are offered in schools, universities and community centres. Then there are the more fun and interesting ways such as going to a native-speaking area and diving into the culture and language of Gaeilge. Tutoring lies in the middle of this spectrum. You could find a native speaker and learn how to pronounce the language like a local. Or if they’ve lived in Ireland they can give you all the tips for passing the Leaving Cert. Once you know where to look you can find a vibrant Irish-speaking community anywhere in Ireland. Tutors can sometimes lean towards more traditional teaching styles but with Superprof and similar services, you are treated to a wide range of tutors. If you prefer a more rigid, systematic approach you’ll certainly find some Leaving Cert experts who can help. However, if you prefer the polar opposite you’ll always find Irish teachers who are filled with bright new ideas and approaches. This is one of the greatest joys of learning a language and one of the greatest benefits of getting a tutor.
Teachers will cover every area you need for the exams but as we all know, not every chapter was created equal. This is why tutors are excellent for school students, they can go through difficult sections with you step by step whenever you need them to. They have more flexibility to revisit chapters you were struggling with too. When it comes to the end of the curriculum and everyone is in study mode, you’ll have the advantage of someone who knows your personal strengths and weaknesses to test you. Getting a tutor in Carlow, who can go through the material with you in person is well worth the money. In Carlow city alone the going rate is a very reasonable 20 euro with a wide range of tutors to choose from!
Finding a tutor online couldn’t be easier. Superprof is a large platform that offers tutors for every level of maths, from primary school to potentially a master’s. The details of each tutor are available and they can be filtered on a multitude of criteria. Finding tutors in Carlow is no harder than a single mouse click. Simply hover over “class location” and click “around me”, before you know all the tutors around you will spring up! Our tutors are frequently reviewed and many have their certifications on display to ensure you can find the best tutor for you.
