FAQ's

🧬 Which concepts are fundamental in Gaeilge?

The Irish language is built on VSO word order, two types of consonant mutations, and a masculine-feminine noun system.

  • In Irish, sentences start with the verb, not the subject as in English.
  • Séimhiú (lenition) softens consonants by adding a h, like "cat" becoming "chat."
  • Urú (eclipsis) places a new consonant before another, such as "bean" becoming "mbean."
  • Nouns are masculine or feminine, which affects the adjectives and articles you use.

Private lessons let you build muscle memory for mutations through guided conversation.

How long are the Irish lessons?

The standard time of one lesson is 1 hour but it can vary sometimes depending on the tutor. You’ll be able to see from their profile the details of their lessons and if something isn’t clear or missing, then you can easily find out by using our messaging system to contact our tutors.

Depending on their availability it can be possible to book more than one lesson at a time which means if you wanted, you could have a two-hour session for example.

Are the lessons done individually or in a group setting?

Most classes and lessons are one on one with your tutor but some do group classes if it's suitable with the classwork, such as practising talking and using the language together.

Tutors will make it clear on their profile if they are happy teaching group sessions or individual ones.

Why get the help of a tutor?

You might be wondering if it is worth it or even necessary to pay money to get some extra help for the Irish. If you or someone you know is struggling at school in the subject, if you have a passion for the language and want some guidance so that you can learn as much as possible, then enlisting the help of someone skilled in the language will help you attain your goals much more efficiently and faster than if you chose to just do it all by yourself.

The tutors can correct your work, and give you pointers on where to improve and exactly how you could do so. You can practice writing, talking and listening to the language and get detailed feedback in return. You will have their full attention during classes, and unlike teachers, the tutors won’t have to divide their focus among lots of different people. and can focus their efforts on teaching you.

If learning Irish is your goal or catching up to where you should be in your class then you cannot go wrong by getting extra lessons.

What university courses require Irish as a minimum requirement?

Most universities in Ireland have some sort of minimum requirement for Irish to be accepted into many of the courses. According to Qualifax, there are over 300 courses that require it in some form.

Some examples of how it can be mandatory in some way are that for some courses Irish had to be taken for the LC (unless exempt from the subject) and that you have to attain a certain result such as an O6 or H7 to be able to even apply for the course, even if it is a subject such as accounting (at UCC)

Similar requirements can be seen for Maynooth university in its Economics course. As you can see, even if the subject itself may not be directly linked to the language, it is an important core of your education and it is necessary to do fairly well in it to keep your options open.

Is it possible to see and make feedback to our tutors?

Indeed it is, we have a relatively new feature now allowing you to leave reviews of the tutors that you had on their profile. This means that you can leave some nice words for those whom you found particularly helpful and also some constructive feedback if there was something that you weren’t happy with.

With reviews now being visible for tutor profiles, you and everyone else on the site can make more informed decisions when trying to find and choose a tutor to help you with your work.

Slightly linked to making feedback and details more open and available for everyone using the platform, we have a handy feature allowing you to see how many students a particular tutor is already teaching and helping so that you can get an idea of their availability without even having to message first. You’ll find this info when clicking into a profile and it will be displayed in the top right corner underneath their response time to messages.
