About Matthew

Latin is a subject that I have always had a massive love for.

I went to a state school and I used to think Latin was only something accessible to people who went to private schools, but I was soon proven wrong.

Latin is a subject that allows you to develop your English language skills as 80% of English is derived from Latin. Understanding etymology is incredibly useful and Latin is a gateway into learning other modern romance languages such as French and Italian.

I love teaching people about something I am passionate about and there is no other feeling in the world like watching them become as equally passionate as you.

Some people believe that Latin is a bore but I want my lessons to ensure that they no longer think that way.

Many students are bored of translating ancient texts and that is completely understandable. I will able to provide modern texts translated into Latin such as Winnie the Pooh, and this will make translation a lot more fun and current.

I would truly appreciate if you'd trust me to help you achieve the grade that you need!

About the lesson

I have experience in being a teaching assistant to Latin classes and have widespread resources to share to GCSE and ALevel students.

I will spend my lessons helping students with vocab memorisation by using sites such as Memrise, translation technique/practice from beginner to intermediate levels, and I will also be able to help students analyse ancient literary texts. I am also able to proofread their essays/translations and provide feedback to them to ensure they achieve the grade they need to be working to.

My lessons will either be an hour or an hour and a half long, depending on what potential clients choose to be the most helpful for them.

They will also be Remote lessons on Discord as I will be able to both call students on there as well as share my screen to them to go through work step by step. Discord is also an application that allows me to share documents/resources to students effectively.

I am currently in my second year of earning a Classics degree at Bristol University and I have achieved a 9 at GCSE and an A at ALevel in Latin myself.

Matthew was such a lovely teacher for my son’s Latin GCSE. He was very kind and informative every step of the way. Starting at a grade of a 5 from his winter mocks, he has gone up to a 7+ in the summer mocks and will hopefully keep improving! A++++
