I think the best way to teach history to school students is by breaking down each important event into smaller sections; causes, events, results. This allows a better understanding before understanding the impact of each event and placing it within a wider context. Further, the beat way to understand, as opposed to memorise, is to ask lots of questions to increase interest in the topic and engage properly with the subject.
