About Carmen
You want to play the guitar without getting stuck in a loop of boring drills. My background includes 13 years of gigging in small venues across Melbourne.
I hold a BM Contemporary Music from the Australian Institute of Music. My work with 454 students has taught me that structure beats theory every day.
I teach intermediate learners, kids, and teens how to master IMPROVISATION AND SOLOING. My approach is loose and jokey to keep the pressure low. We focus on the MUSIC that you actually want to play.

Starting out, you might think you need to memorize every scale before you play a single song. Actually, playing comes first. We get into tuning and maintenance, then move straight to chord transitions that make sense in a real set. My 13 years of gigging mean I prioritize practical acoustic and electric technique over stuffy textbook exercises.
We will talk about ear training and reading tabs because those are the keys to playing with other people. If you are an advanced player, we can look at modes or fine tuning your performance stagecraft.
It is pretty common to feel frustrated with rhythm, so we spend time fixing that early on. I like to keep the atmosphere relaxed, even when we are grinding through difficult passages. Bringing your own material to the table is encouraged, as I work with many performance focused students. You will find that making music should be fun rather than a chore.
