About Carlos

While I have microbiology as a profession, I am very passionate about learning new things. Often this involves keeping up to date with recent discoveries in my field and general science. However, as it's part of the human experience I have had the encounter with the field of humanities. Learning a new language and the culture that comes with it is a requirement for an immigrant, which I am (born in Cuba, grew up in Colombia), and I have come to enjoy it. While I had formal education on English for well over 6 years, I continue to learn more about different languages in my free time. Currently I can hold simple conversations in German, and am starting to learn Japanese. I would be happy to share my native language with you (and culture too!).

About the lesson

I take multiple approaches depending on the objectives and stages of the students, but with a general focus on structure and phonology:

- for beginners to the language I focus specifically on general grammar rules, word morphology, and phonology (through a limited vocabulary as an example get used to how the words sound and are formed)

- for intermediate learners I widen the scope into syntax and sentence structure (with the previous foundation, put words together into more complex ideas)

- for advanced speakers already familiar with the language and its rules, I offer composition and reading comprehension activities as a way to expand their vocabulary (from common use to more academic and formal language, learn new words as we read through, digest, and translate any text of your choosing)

This structure is made with the purpose of splitting the language into logical steps that can be reasoned through, especially for when the task of learning a new language feels too large, as it often does. Looking forward to working with all of you!
