About Melinda

I'm Melinda, a violinist and string teacher from South East Queensland. Music has always been at the heart of what I do, but helping others experience it has become my life's work.

Over more than 35 years I've taught hundreds of students, from young beginners to adults picking up a violin for the very first time. Some have gone on to conservatorium programs in Australia and London; others have simply discovered the joy of playing a tune they love. Both matter to me just as much.

Alongside teaching, I perform classical and Celtic music. I founded the Moreton Celtic Fiddle Club in 2007, I'm a member of Australian Celtic Women, and I've played in orchestras, string quartets, bush bands and old-time dance bands, as a soloist at concerts and weddings, and on a film soundtrack. I play 11 different instruments.

I teach because so many adults feel unsure, overwhelmed or worried they've "left it too late". They haven't. Music doesn't ask us to be perfect – it simply asks us to listen. I'd love to help you begin.

About the lesson

My lessons are for adults who have always wanted to play the violin, and for returning players picking it up again after many years. No experience is needed, and it's never too late to start.

My approach is simple: confidence before perfection, and clarity before complexity. I break everything into calm, clear steps, so you're never rushed or overwhelmed.

Lessons are live and one-to-one online, usually 30 minutes long. In your first lesson we talk about your goals and the music you'd love to play, and I check your violin setup, posture and bow hold. From there, each lesson builds on the last. We work on tone, bowing, left-hand technique, scales, reading music and playing by ear, using pieces you enjoy, from classical to Celtic. I demonstrate as we go, so you can hear exactly what we're aiming for, and you'll leave every lesson with a short, achievable practice plan.

I have over 35 years of teaching experience, including the Suzuki Method, private and group tuition in schools and colleges, and founding my own online violin academy for adult learners. I was nominated for the ARIA Music Teacher Award in 2020 and 2021, received an Outstanding Contribution to Music Award in 2025, and I'm the founder and Musical Director of the Moreton Celtic Fiddle Club.

All my lessons are online, through the Melinda Coles Violin Academy – there are no in-person lessons, so there's no travel or venue cost.

THE MUSIC ROOM (Academy membership)
Step-by-step video lessons for adult beginners and returning players, which you can pause and replay at your own pace. Includes practice tools that listen to you play, feedback on your playing, group sessions, monthly practice challenges, Coffee Chats with me and a friendly community of adult learners. New lessons are added regularly.

PRIVATE ONLINE LESSONS (one-to-one)
- 30-minute lesson: $79
- 15-minute "Ask Melinda" session: $49 – for quick questions like tuning, bow hold or shoulder rest fitting

No extra costs: you just need your own violin, a phone, tablet or computer with a camera, and an internet connection.

I do not offer a free 30 min lesson (I cannot turn off the prompt) I do however offer a 14 day trial before signing up to lessons on my academy..
