About Susannah
Originally from Yorkshire, I now live in Somerset but also lived for several years in County Waterford in Ireland. I began learning the flute aged seven, and currently attend Wells Cathedral School as a specialist musician, supported by a full bursary from the government's Music and Dance Scheme. Here I play in a range of chamber and larger groups, from a flute ensemble to the Symphony Orchestra, alongside varied opportunities for solo performance. Outside of school, Susannah also plays principal flute with several national orchestras and a recent highlight includes a solo performance in the House of Lords. I have enjoyed playing for semi-professional musical theatre productions, including ‘Annie’ and ‘West Side Story’, with experience doubling on piccolo and saxophone. I was delighted to be awarded a full bursary to attend the 2024 Oxford Flute Summer School, during which I played in a masterclass given by Robert Winn (Hochschule für Musik Köln). An ongoing project includes participation in the BBC Exchange programme with Awards for Young Musicians, for which I have been selected to be mentored by one of the flautists in a BBC orchestra.

Having first heard a flute aged 7, I immediately fell in love. Thanks to my brilliant teachers over the past 10 years, I have developed both a strong ability in playing, but also a personal connection and true joy from this. Now, looking towards a bright career in music, I hope to gain invaluable teaching experience and to spread my passion for music with my students. As I have previously enjoyed teaching less experienced pupils, I already have knowledge of teaching strategies and techniques, and a whole wealth of exercises and warm-ups to help people of all ages and abilities to flourish. Lessons typically vary between 30-60 minutes, depending on ability and goals. I will be very happy to advise on this, and also to provide more general advice in the sessions, with particular regards to networking, performance, and advanced amateur music programmes/courses (eg. specialist music schools)
