About Stevi-Lee

Currently based in Brazil, I have had work published across Australia and the United States. In 2017, my work has appeared in Overland, Her Heart Poetry and Westerly Magazine. My story ‘Contributory Negligence’ was commended for the 2017 ABR Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize, and my poem ‘talking to ludwig’ was awarded second prize in the 2017 MPU International Poetry Competition. Rochford Street Press published my chapbook Cactus in 2016.

About the lesson

These online workshops offer you the opportunity to practise some of the necessary basic skills of creative writing and to get feedback on your work. This is one of the most important things for a writer, particularly a beginning writer. Intensive workshopping aims to generate quality work suitable for publication.

We will work together to build the writer’s confidence, in which the writer will begin to distance themselves from the work, to see it as an artefact, a constructed object made of black marks on pages, a written text which is not and never can be part of you – and which you are no longer part of; which will not ever be simply a mirror to experience. This is a big hurdle to overcome for many writers starting out, but once over it you will be liberated to really begin your writing life.

Writing, like all crafts, is a combination of passion (to tell your stories) and the discipline to work at shaping your material. It is hard work, but it is exciting and rewarding work. Also, like other crafts, writing begins as an apprenticeship. Many
of you will have already served much of that indenture – you will already be avid readers of other people’s work. It’s the other thing writers do – they read. Reading is not only where you acquire a sense of the best writing by the best writers, as well as what’s being written around you, the context in which you will write, it is a stimulus to your imaginative life. If you don’t read, this imaginative side of you will be restricted to your own thoughts and insights and you won’t fully understand how, where (or whether) they can best be expressed. Texts will be provided for close reading activities during the workshops.
