About David
David Annand has worked as an editor at Condé Nast Traveller and GQ, and has reviewed fiction for the Times Literary Supplement, Telegraph, Literary Review, Financial Times, and New Statesman, among other outlets. His first novel, PETERDOWN, won the McKitterick Prize in 2022, and received widespread acclaim. Tom Ball of The Times wrote: “Few novels quite match David Annand's debut… so enjoyable to read: the deft and humorous telling of people trying to muddle through modern life”; Tom Williams of Literary Review called PETERDOWN “a state-of-the-nation work evincing a sweeping preoccupation with ideas of community, space and place… a timely book, clear in its concerns and vital in its focus.” His second novel, THE DICE WAS LOADED FROM THE START, will be published on March 5th 2026. He has a BA in politics from the University of Newcastle, an MA in Creative Writing from Birkbeck and currently lives in Barcelona.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to creative writing and I always look to help tutees find their own voice in whatever way works best for them. In our introductory meeting we’ll discuss what you want to achieve from the sessions and create a bespoke plan just for you. All sessions will be tailored to the individual but the kind of approaches we might take include: Kickstart your Creative Writing Got an idea but don’t know where to start? In these sessions we’ll look at approaching the empty page, structuring your ideas, finding your voice and developing your plot. Learning to Read Like a Writer In these sessions we’ll do in-depth analysis of other writers. But instead of focusing on the themes of their work as one might in an English literature class, we’ll look at the texts from a technical perspective. How do they build scenes? Control pace? Reveal character? Chapter Analysis (2hrs: 1hr prep, 1hr face-to-face) Ahead of these sessions tutees will be asked to submit 3-4000 words of prose 24hrs before the session starts. I will then spend an hour on prep, reading and writing comments on the document. We’ll then meet online for an hour to discuss the work.
