About Sophia
Hello! I'm Sophia, an award-winning poet, published writer, and English teacher with over five years' experience supporting students from Reception (aged 4) through to Year 13 (aged 18). I hold a Distinction MA in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths, University of London, and have taught creative writing at the University of Cambridge, alongside several years of classroom teaching across London schools.
Teaching has always been one of the most rewarding parts of my work. I love helping students discover that English is far more than a school subject—it's a way of understanding ourselves, making sense of the world, and finding the confidence to express our own ideas. Whether a student is striving for top exam results, looking to improve their writing, or simply hoping to enjoy English a little more, I believe every learner deserves to feel supported, listened to, and encouraged.
My teaching style is warm, patient, and personalised. I understand that every student learns differently, so I adapt each lesson to suit their individual goals, pace, and learning style. Creating a calm, positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes is incredibly important to me, as this is often where the greatest progress is made.
Alongside teaching, I am a practising writer. My poetry has been recognised with the Eric Gregory Award and published in a range of literary magazines, giving me first-hand experience of the writing and publishing world. I enjoy bringing this experience into my lessons, helping students develop not only their analytical skills but also their creativity, curiosity, and confidence as writers.
Above all, I want my students to leave each lesson feeling more capable than when they arrived. Whether we're exploring Shakespeare, preparing for GCSEs or A-Levels, writing university application essays, or crafting a poem, my goal is to help every student realise their potential and enjoy the learning process along the way.

I believe the best lessons are those that are tailored to each individual student. Everyone learns differently, so I take the time to understand each student's goals, strengths, and areas where they would like to build confidence. Whether you're preparing for an exam, improving your essay writing, developing your reading skills, or exploring creative writing, I adapt my teaching to suit your needs.
My lessons are engaging, supportive, and discussion-led. I encourage students to think critically, ask questions, and develop their own ideas rather than simply memorising information. Depending on the student's goals, lessons may include close reading of texts, essay planning, writing exercises, exam practice, or constructive feedback on written work. My aim is to help students become more confident, independent learners while fostering a genuine enjoyment of English.
I hold a Distinction MA in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths, University of London, and have over five years' teaching experience across London schools, including teaching creative writing at the University of Cambridge. During this time, I have taught students from Reception (aged 4), at the very start of primary school, through to Year 13 (aged 18), supporting learners at every stage of their education. I have experience working with students of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and English as an Additional Language (EAL). As an award-winning poet, I bring both academic expertise and real-world writing experience to every lesson.
Lessons are typically one hour, although longer or shorter sessions can be arranged if required. I welcome students of all ages and abilities, whether they are looking to build confidence in English, prepare for SATs, GCSEs or A-Levels, strengthen their academic writing, prepare university applications, or develop their creative writing skills.
