About Christina

Hi, my name is Christina Cortez. I am so excited to teach you Spanish! I am a very passionate teacher who loves teaching Spanish. This is my 15th year of teaching. Over the past 15 years, I have had the opportunity to work with learners of all ages from kindergarten to 12th grade and beyond. I enjoy working with language learning students at all levels. I have a passion for connecting and building community with my students while fostering a love for the target language and culture. In addition to sharing my love of languages with my students, I love connecting with other teachers and volunteering in my community. Through mentoring local student and practicum teachers, presenting at conferences and in my past role serving as the president of the IWLA (Iowa World Language Association) I have been able to connect with so many others who share the same passion for language learning. I grew up in Des Moines, IA and earned my B.A. in both TESOL and Spanish teaching and a certificate in Spanish translation from the University of Northern Iowa. In my free time, I like to spend time with my family, read, travel, and volunteer in my community.

Scaffolded learning: I break concepts down step-by-step and build your skills with supportive practice and review. Interactive tools: I use digital flashcards, quizzes, and real-life scenarios to keep lessons dynamic and fun. A typical lesson might include: - Warm-up with a quick review or fun vocab game -Target skill focus (grammar, speaking, listening, or writing) -Real-world practice through dialogues, cultural content, or scenarios -Wrap-up and feedback with quick tips or at-home practice suggestions. What sets me apart: -I bring a warm, encouraging environment to each session—no judgment, just growth. -I specialize in making Spanish approachable for students who’ve felt overwhelmed or bored in the past. -I offer customized resources, tailored feedback, and a clear progression to keep you motivated and on track.
