About Ryan

Hi, I’m Ryan, and I’m an award-winning writer, filmmaker, and SCAD graduate with global recognition from institutions accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and BAFTA. My expertise spans creative writing, screenwriting, prose, poetry, and storytelling across multiple mediums. Beyond my industry experience, I have a strong background in teaching creative writing and filmmaking. I served as a Lead Instructor at Fairfax Collegiate, teaching film production, creative writing, and public speaking to students in grades 3-12, and as a Teaching Artist at Workhouse Arts Center, where I developed curricula for students Pre-K through 12th grade. About the lesson

This course is designed to help students master the art of storytelling across multiple forms, including short stories, long-form prose, screenwriting for TV & film, and modern storytelling for digital platforms, such as social media and interactive media. Whether you’re a beginner looking to build a foundation or an experienced writer seeking refinement, my lessons offer an in-depth exploration of the craft, tailored to your skill level and creative goals.

Core Elements of Storytelling:
• Character Development – Crafting rich, multidimensional characters with distinct voices, motivations, and arcs.
• Plot and Structure – Understanding the three-act structure, non-linear storytelling, pacing, and building tension.
• Theme and Subtext – Infusing deeper meaning into stories to create emotional resonance.
• Dialogue and Voice – Writing natural, engaging dialogue that serves both character and story.
• Worldbuilding – Creating immersive settings that enhance the narrative and ground the audience in your world.
• Genre and Style – Exploring different genres and writing styles to help you develop a unique voice.

Screenwriting Focus:
• Script Formatting and Industry Standards – Learning professional screenplay structure using Final Draft or industry-accepted formats.
• Visual Storytelling – Writing with a cinematic eye, emphasizing subtext, pacing, and scene transitions.
• Screenwriting vs. Prose – Understanding the fundamental differences between screenwriting and literary storytelling to develop stronger scripts.

Prose and Poetry Exploration:
• Narrative Perspective – Mastering first-person, third-person, omniscient, and unreliable narrators.
• Rhythm, Cadence, and Imagery – Using poetic devices and stylistic choices to elevate storytelling.
• Short Stories vs. Novels – Structuring longer works while maintaining engagement and clarity.
