About Colin

I've been tutoring students since 2014, primarily in mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics, with additional experience teaching computer programming. I hold a PhD in Bioengineering from the joint UC Berkeley–UCSF program, with an emphasis in Computational Biology. Professionally, I've developed AI agents, software tools, and cloud-based systems, and my academic training and hands-on experience also allow me to help students with algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in a simple principle: if I can't explain something clearly and simply, I don't understand it well enough. That's why I've invested considerable effort in developing a strong foundational understanding of the subjects I teach. I am able to break even the most complex concepts into small, logical steps and answer students' questions directly, without hand-waving or glossing over the fundamental ideas necessary for genuine understanding.

I take a methodical approach to teaching, introducing concepts incrementally and using carefully constructed questions to verify understanding before moving on to more advanced material. My goal isn't simply for students to arrive at the correct answer, but for them to understand why it's correct and develop the ability to reason through unfamiliar problems independently. I place strong emphasis on having students demonstrate to themselves their own understanding of the material by posing questions that require them to verbalize what they know.

I also recognize that people think and learn differently. I take the time to understand how each student approaches a subject and adapt my explanations using analogies, metaphors, and examples that connect with their way of thinking. I strive to create a comfortable, encouraging environment where students feel free to ask questions and make mistakes. By building on small successes, I help students develop both a solid understanding of the material and the confidence to tackle increasingly challenging problems.

My teaching style comes down to one idea: if I can't explain something simply, I don't understand it well enough. I break every topic into small, atomic steps that are easy to check for understanding, and we don't move on until a student demonstrates they've actually got each one. That way we build a solid foundation before taking on more complex material.

I don't believe there are "math people" and "non-math people." People just think differently. My job is to figure out how a particular student thinks and present the material through analogies and metaphors that speak to their way of understanding, so nothing gets lost in translation.

Just as important: I work to make students feel comfortable, and I build in small wins as we learn. Each small victory gives encouragement and proves to the student that they really do have the ability to understand the material.
