About Emma

I am an 18 year old high school graduate who grew up in Spain, so I have been studying foreign languages for as long as I can remember. I have experienced first hand how many doors being bilingual can open up, studying both French and Spanish to Advanced Higher level (AA). Having finished school and being familiar with both the SQA and DELE exam systems, I now wish to pass my knowledge on to others to help them not only ace their exams, but develop a true love for languages and provide them with valuable skills for the future.

About the lesson

I believe it is very important to make tutoring enjoyable, as students (myself included!) are much more likely to work hard at a subject they want to succeed at. My lessons tend to have a strong focus on speaking: I will run a 5-10 minute discussion at the beginning of every lesson about what the student has done this week to get to know each other and improve confidence when speaking. As a general rule, I will try and conduct as much of the lesson as possible in Spanish, except for when explaining new material as this needs to be correctly communicated. I have this approach because I believe speaking is the hardest element of a language to master without a full cultural immersion and is not emphasised enough in schools, however I am fluent in all aspects of the language and happy to focus on whatever the student needs.

During my time living abroad, I informally taught English and have also spent the last year teaching music at the local primary schools. I plan on studying languages next year as part of my university degree having received straight As throughout my high school education. With regards to languages specifically, I have sat the DELE exams for Spanish and received the Academic Award for Attainment in French 2 years running.

My lessons can range from 1-3 hrs. I would recommend shorter sessions for younger pupils for improved concentration. I will tutor pupils of any level, any age, although my experience up until now has been mainly with secondary school students.
