About Déborah
I believe living abroad has given me a very special relationship with my native language and culture. I moved from Brazil to Canada in my mid-twenties, already fully shaped by Brazilian Portuguese, and since then I’ve continued to use it every single day with family and friends, online, through writing, music, movies, and the communities around me. I also travel back to Brazil every year, which helps me stay connected not only to the language itself, but also to new expressions, slang, cultural references, and the many regional differences that make Brazil so rich and diverse.
Living in Montreal has also expanded my perspective on language and communication. Many of my closest friends here are Brazilian from different parts of the country, which has deepened my understanding of accents, vocabulary, and cultural nuances from multiple regions. For two years, I also worked closely with Portuguese colleagues, which gave me fascinating insight into European Portuguese, especially the differences in sentence structure, pronunciation, and everyday expressions compared to Brazilian Portuguese. I love bringing those comparisons into my lessons because students often find them both useful and fun.
Languages, communication, and culture have always been central to who I am. My love for Portuguese started in childhood and naturally led me to Social Communication - Journalism, where writing became both my passion and my profession. Beyond teaching, I’m also a very curious and creative person. I love roller dancing, painting, reading, singing, and watching movies and series. And I genuinely enjoy connecting with people from different backgrounds and learning about other cultures and languages.
Above all, I want my students to feel comfortable, welcomed, and excited to learn. I know what it feels like to live between languages and cultures, and I try to bring that empathy, curiosity, and enthusiasm into every lesson.

My teaching approach is highly personalized and fully centered on the student's needs. On the first day, I generally have a long conversation to understand exactly what they need and expect from me.
Most of my experience has been with one-on-one lessons, which allows me to fully adapt to each student’s pace, goals, interests, and learning style. I believe grammar is an essential foundation for building confidence in a new language, so I always explain sentence structure, verb usage, and the logic behind the language in a clear and accessible way.
At the same time, I make lessons practical and engaging by connecting them to the students’ real needs. Whether that’s conversation practice, travel preparation, professional communication, writing, or simply gaining confidence speaking Brazilian Portuguese. I often compare Portuguese with the students’ native language, especially English or French (but sometimes also Spanish), to highlight similarities, differences, common mistakes, false friends, and cultural nuances. This usually helps students understand the language more naturally and intuitively.
A typical lesson combines grammar explanations, conversation, pronunciation practice, vocabulary building, and exercises adapted to the student’s level. I also like to include authentic Brazilian materials such as articles, music, videos, or everyday expressions to make learning feel more alive and connected to Brazilian culture.
What sets me apart is my Social Communication background as a journalist and copywriter, which helps me explain language clearly and encourage students to express themselves naturally. I aim to create a relaxed, supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and progressing at their own pace.
My lessons are suitable for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students of all ages who want to learn Brazilian Portuguese in a more human, flexible, and conversational way.
