About Steff

Hi! I'm Steff, a British English teacher currently living and teaching in Japan. I've been teaching for over 10 years, including 9 years specifically teaching English.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Education and have taught students of all ages, from very young children to adults. I really enjoy getting to know my students and finding ways to make lessons work for them, rather than expecting everyone to learn in exactly the same way.

I'm particularly passionate about helping students who don't always enjoy traditional classroom learning. I have experience supporting learners with different learning needs, and I like finding practical and creative ways to make learning less frustrating and more enjoyable.

Outside of teaching, I'm a huge animal lover and have three dogs, so you'll often find animals making their way into my teaching materials! This is also part of the inspiration behind my Clear Sky English resources, where I combine English with subjects such as animals, nature and science.

I'm friendly, patient and easy to talk to, and I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and trying things out. Whether you're learning English for school, work, travel or simply because you want to, I'll do my best to make the lessons useful and enjoyable.

About the lesson

I'm a British English teacher with 9 years of English teaching experience and over 10 years of teaching experience overall. I teach children and adults of all levels, with lessons adapted to your goals, interests and learning style.

I don't rely on a single textbook. I use a CEFR-based ESL curriculum alongside my own PowerPoint lessons, activities and resources, so lessons have a clear structure and progression while still being personalised to each student.

For children, I like to make lessons active and engaging rather than having them sit and listen for the whole lesson. Depending on the student, we might use games, stories, pictures, songs, conversation, phonics, reading, creative activities or topics they are interested in. I also offer optional STEM/STEAM activities through my own teaching platform, Clear Sky English, combining English with subjects such as science, animals, nature, creativity and problem-solving.

For older students and adults, lessons can focus on conversation, confidence, pronunciation, writing, business English, school or whatever areas you would particularly like to improve.

I also have experience supporting learners with different learning needs, including ADHD and autism, and I try to adapt my teaching to the individual rather than expecting everyone to learn in exactly the same way.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Education, and my university studies included Foreign Language Teaching Methodology, English for Children, and Language Teaching, Learning & Creativity.

Most importantly, I want students to feel comfortable making mistakes and trying things out. Learning a language takes practice, and my aim is to make lessons useful, relaxed and enjoyable while helping you make real progress.

I currently teach online from Japan and have availability that works particularly well for students looking for US morning or daytime lessons.
