About Sophia

I am a certified social studies teacher with three years of experience teaching middle and high school history, including the U.S. History Regents. I hold a Master of Science in Teaching from Hunter College and a B.A. in International Political Economy from Fordham University. I bring both rigor and compassion to my lessons, helping students strengthen their critical thinking, writing, and document analysis skills. My sessions are structured, supportive, and engaging—designed to make history meaningful and accessible for every learner. Fluent in Spanish and conversational in Mandarin and Dutch, I work effectively with multilingual students and adapt lessons to meet diverse learning needs. About the lesson

My approach as a tutor is rooted in the belief that students will meet the bar you set when they feel supported and challenged. I create a classroom environment that balances warmth with rigor—one where students feel confident engaging with complex material and proud of their growth. I specialize in social studies instruction, helping students build critical thinking skills through document analysis, discussion, and writing. I encourage students to recognize the subjectivity of historical narratives and to connect past events to the world they live in today. My lessons often combine visual aids, guided practice, and scaffolded assignments to meet students at their individual levels. A typical session includes a short review to assess understanding, targeted instruction focused on a key concept or skill, and a closing activity that reinforces what we learned through discussion or application. I incorporate strategies that build reading comprehension and analytical writing, and I tailor lessons to support multilingual learners and diverse learning styles. What sets me apart is my ability to make history come alive. I help students see themselves as part of history—not just memorizing facts, but understanding how the past shapes their present and future. I’m fluent in English and Spanish and conversational in Mandarin and Dutch, which helps me connect with a wide range of learners. My tutoring is ideal for middle and high school students preparing for U.S. or Global History Regents exams, working to strengthen essay writing and critical thinking, or simply looking to feel more confident in social studies.
