About Therese

I view teaching saxophone as an opportunity to help students build a strong technical foundation while exploring and expressing their individual musical identity. Proper breath control, embouchure formation, finger dexterity, and rhythmic precision are essential skills I prioritize to ensure a beautiful, consistent tone and technical fluency. I place special emphasis on articulation and intonation to develop musical phrasing and stylistic authenticity. Improvisation is woven into lessons early on through interactive exercises and scale exploration, fostering creativity and self-expression. Music theory is integrated seamlessly within lessons, linked directly to repertoire and improvisational practice, making learning both practical and inspiring. I encourage students to engage with a broad spectrum of musical styles—whether jazz, blues, pop, or classical—to maintain enthusiasm and expand their versatility. Collaboratively setting achievable goals provides structure and motivation, whether preparing for performances, auditions, or personal growth. A particularly rewarding teaching moment was supporting a student who transformed from a hesitant beginner to an expressive soloist performing confidently in a community band. My goal is to guide students toward becoming technically proficient, confident, and artistically vibrant saxophonists who love making music.

My approach to teaching saxophone revolves around fostering a deep connection between the student and their instrument through a balance of technical mastery and artistic expression. I believe that the saxophone is a powerful medium for storytelling and emotional communication, and my goal is to help students harness this potential. We start with essential techniques—posture, breath support, embouchure, tone production, finger agility, and articulation—because these fundamentals enable freedom and confidence in playing.

However, lessons are never purely technical; I weave in theory, ear training, and improvisation to make music come alive and feel relevant. I tailor my teaching to each student’s interests and aspirations, whether they want to play jazz, classical, rock, or experimental music. Repertoire is chosen thoughtfully to challenge and inspire, often including transcriptions and original compositions.

Improvisation is a key focus because it cultivates creativity and spontaneous musical dialogue; I guide students through scales, modes, and rhythmic exercises that build a strong improvisational vocabulary. I integrate technology such as slow-down software, recording tools, and digital metronomes to enhance practice and self-assessment. Performance skills are cultivated through regular recitals, ensemble work, and mock auditions to build confidence and presence.

A memorable teaching moment was working with a student who struggled with sound control; after targeted embouchure and breathing exercises combined with consistent practice, they achieved a warm, expressive tone and the confidence to perform publicly. Ultimately, my mission is to help students develop as complete musicians who not only play well but communicate authentically, finding joy and fulfillment in their musical journey.
