About Ashley

About Me

My name is Ashley Bognot, and I am a chess player and instructor from the Philippines. I have participated in various chess tournaments, earning 2nd-place and 4th-place finishes in inter-barangay competitions. I also have some experience teaching chess, where I help learners understand the fundamentals, develop their strategic thinking, and improve their playing skills.

Although I am still growing as an instructor, I am committed to sharing my knowledge, learning from experience, and helping students build confidence and a deeper appreciation for chess. My approach focuses on patience, clear instruction, and practical learning to help students improve at their own pace.

Chess Lessons and Training Overview

Chess is a game that develops strategic thinking, patience, concentration, and decision-making. As a chess teacher, my goal is to help students understand the fundamentals of chess while gradually improving their skills and confidence. My lessons are designed for beginners and developing players who want to understand not only how to play, but also how to think strategically and make better decisions during a game.

Topics Covered in My Lessons

1. Basic Rules and Fundamentals

Students will learn how each chess piece moves, captures, and interacts with other pieces. This includes essential rules such as check, checkmate, stalemate, castling, en passant, and pawn promotion. The goal is to build a solid understanding of the game before moving on to more advanced concepts.

2. Chess Openings

Students will explore the principles of a strong opening, including controlling the center, developing pieces, and ensuring king safety. They will also be introduced to different opening strategies and systems to help them establish a good position from the beginning of the game.

3. Chess Terminology and Systems

This lesson covers important chess terms, algebraic notation, and common strategic concepts. Students will learn how to record moves, recognize threats, understand positional advantages, and analyze chess positions more effectively.

4. Middlegame Theory and Strategy

Students will develop their tactical and strategic skills by studying forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, and combinations. They will also learn about piece coordination, pawn structures, attacking plans, defensive techniques, and how to identify weaknesses in an opponent's position.

5. Endgame Theory

Students will learn how to handle the final phase of a chess game, where precision and calculation become especially important. Topics include king and pawn endings, opposition, pawn promotion, rook endgames, and basic checkmating techniques. The focus is on converting advantages into wins and defending difficult positions.

6. Practical Techniques and Game Analysis

Students will apply their knowledge through practice games, chess puzzles, and position analysis. They will learn to calculate possible moves, recognize mistakes, evaluate positions, manage their time, and make more informed decisions during competitive or casual play.

My goal as a chess teacher is to provide students with a strong foundation and help them improve at their own pace. Through structured lessons, practical exercises, and game analysis, students can develop their understanding of chess and become more confident players. Beyond winning, chess teaches valuable skills such as patience, discipline, problem-solving, and critical thinking—qualities that can be applied both on and off the chessboard.
