About Freddie
I'm Freddie, a second-year Materials Science and Engineering student at Imperial College London, living in West London.
I started playing chess when I was a kid with my dad. I only really started playing at 13 during COVID when I would watch GothamChess and Eric Rosen.
Teaching is something I genuinely enjoy. For the past year I've volunteered as a Lead Coach with Chess in Schools and Communities, a charity that brings chess to schools and communities across the UK. I run weekly group classes and have coached children at the charity's events, which has taught me how to explain ideas clearly to people of very different ages and backgrounds.
I'm patient, reliable and organised. I always turn up prepared, keep track of each student's progress, and give honest, encouraging feedback. My aim is for every student to leave each lesson understanding something new, and to enjoy the game a little more than when they arrived.

Hi, I'm Freddie, a 2000-rated chess player and second-year engineering student at Imperial College London. I was Head of Chess at Eton, where I captained the school team. For the past year I've been a Lead Coach with Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC), running weekly group classes of 8 to 20 players, and I've coached children aged 5 to 13 at CSC events. I also play competitive over-the-board chess for Charlton Chess Club.
My approach:
I tailor every lesson to the student. Before we start, I'll ask you to share a few of your recent games (or for beginners, we'll play together) so I can see your strengths and recurring mistakes. From there, each lesson usually combines:
- A short review of a recent game, picking out the key moments
One focused topic, such as a tactical pattern, an opening idea or a basic endgame
- Puzzles and practice positions to lock it in
- A short game or exercise at the end to put it into practice
Between lessons, I'll set a little work, like puzzles or games to play, so progress continues all week.
Lesson length
Lessons are usually 60 minutes but can be 30.
Who the lessons are for
I teach complete beginners through to club players rated around 1800, children and adults alike. Whether your child is learning how the pieces move, you're preparing for school or club tournaments, or you're an adult who's been stuck at the same rating for months, I'll build lessons around you.
Lessons are available in person in Hammersmith or online.
