About Lavanya

Hi, I’m Lavanya! My journey with Mandarin began when I moved to China to pursue my medical degree. Immersing myself in a completely new culture and language was one of the most challenging—yet rewarding—experiences of my life. Navigating daily life and eventually communicating directly with local patients in hospital wards showed me that language isn't just about grammar; it’s about connection, empathy, and real-world confidence.

Having walked the path of a complete beginner, I know how intimidating Mandarin can feel at first. I am passionate about teaching because I believe language opens doors to genuine cultural connection and everyday confidence. I understand the exact challenges non-native speakers face, and I love helping adult expats and young learners turn Mandarin from a daunting subject into a skill they look forward to practicing.

About the lesson

My Teaching Methodology
I believe language learning should be practical, engaging, and directly useful in your everyday life. Having lived in China and routinely conversed with local Chinese patients during my clinical training, I understand firsthand how to bridge the gap between textbook grammar and real-world fluency.

My teaching approach is strictly tailored to your specific goals:

For Young Learners (Ages 5–9): I use an encouraging, interactive approach focused on visual aids, correct pronunciation (Pinyin), and simple sentence structures. Lessons build a strong phonetic foundation and foster a genuine curiosity for the language, making learning Mandarin as a third language a fun, rewarding habit rather than a chore.

For Adult Expats (Conversational Mandarin): We skip dry drills and focus on immediate, functional speaking for daily life—navigating markets, dining out, talking to neighbours, and handling workplace interactions. I use immersive conversation and practical scenarios so you can speak confidently from day one without feeling overwhelmed by character writing unless you choose to learn it.

Lesson Structure & Duration
Duration: Standard lessons are 60 minutes—the ideal balance for high retention and focused practice.

Typical Flow: We begin with a 5-minute conversational warm-up to review past vocabulary, move into a new practical topic or situational dialogue, and finish with interactive speaking practice or games to reinforce learning.

Qualifications & Experience
Full Academic Immersion: Graduated from medical school in China, mastering high-level speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

Certified Proficiency: Excelled in HSK Level IV.

Cross-Cultural Understanding: As a former international student in China, I understand the exact hurdles non-native speakers face when learning Mandarin—and how to overcome them efficiently.
